It does sound like its wicking up thru from the padding and the carpet backing.. Doesn t always mean you have to replace the padding. If you know what the stain was, treat accordingly. This you can find at any carpet manufacturers site on how to treat stains. Once you have it cleaned and wet topically, you need to rinse and soak ( blot)up and rinse and blot up the stain more. Always bot at the stain, don t rub and work from the out side in towards the middle. GL

Anything that comes back through once a carpet is steam cleaned will keep bleeding through for a long time. Buy something that is inexpensive because you will be using it for a while. Usually it means that whatever it is that stained the carpet in the first place also soaked the carpet padding which needs to be replaced.
