Types of rat question?

I want to buy 2 female rats but confused by the types. I know there aren't breeds but different coat types and ear types. I like the ear type of dumbo rats and I like the coat colour of Russian Blue rats but.... is there such a thing as a Russian Blue Dumbo? Do all coat types like hooded, agouti, cinammon etc all come in dumbo or standard ear types??

Technically, yes, all coat types can have either dumbo or standard ears. It just depends upon what is available to you in your area. Russian Blue Dumbo is definitely a type but may prove to be difficult to find. Russian Blue is a relatively new color in the United States and dumbo ears would make it rarer still. Check with the breeders in your area. Breeders will have a wider and healthier selection than pet shops as well as animals bred for their personalities and docility. There is a rumor that dumbo eared rats tend to be mellower than stand eared rats. Not sure if it's true.

Don't listen to hamster owner or whatever their sn is. Male rats tend to have aggression issues, especially when house with other, natural males. If you choose to have males, I suggest starting a vet fund now to afford the neuters once the males go through rattie puberty and start getting aggressive. The male/female debate should be in another Question thread here. :)

You can find most coat colors combined with dumbo ears. I have seen several blue dumbos for adoption at Goosemoose.com over the past year or so, the thing is usually you have to wait when you're set on adopting versus going to a breeder. Temperament and personality matter much more than coat color and ear size, though, so I suggest looking at local shelters/humane society, and if you're unable to fall in love with anyone there, then try to find a few breeders in the area.

Welcome to the world of ratties and hope to see you on Goosemoose!!

My advice is NOT to look in pet stores, but see if you can find a local breeder or 2. Coloring is nice, but temperament is better and you never know, you may find, or may be able to find close to the coloring you want.

    Good Luck

if a dumbo and a russion blue bred then yes but pet shops don't mix breeds. you are best to get 2 males, males are more tolerant and females in all rodents usually can bite. i think they are all standards and dumbo is a seperate breed to all of them.
