Is a 14 foot cross a good secular memorial symbol?
I personally don't have a problem with crosses on the side of highways, yes they look tacky, but they don't particularly bother me, and I think the standard small crosses are arguably a secular memorial symbol, but when you go to 14' I think the connotation changes, since nearly all similarly sized crosses are for religious purposes and the state government should avoid instituting such memorials, especially when they may not be willing to put up a giant Flying Spaghetti Monster symbol or a giant Star of David for a trooper of a different religion. What are your thoughts on this case?

Even if we were all Christian, I think that is overkill. I don't see why a small stone, or a small cross/ Star of David/ whatever wouldn't do it. Who wants a 12 foot reminder of death staring you down all the time?

If there's going to be a govt sponsored symbol to honor a trooper's death, they should vote on what will be the symbol for that community and have a size limit. No matter what was used, 14 ft is a little large...
Edit: I changed my mind-when hired, each person should choose what they want to represent him/her...just in case

I never really understood the whole cross thing for memorials anyways... we're not making a memorial for Jesus are we? I'm pretty sure the memorial was for the victim.
Me... If I die in a car crash b/c a drunk driver hit me, I want a memorial on the side of the road that has that cool cartoony picture of the cocktail and keys with the little circle-Xout thing.

A cross is an ancient instrument of torturous death and humiliation during the times of ancient Rome and used in some other cultures as well.
Christians use it to remember their God, but other than that, yeah, it shouldn't be used for everyone if they really understand what it actually is.
Might as well put electric chairs on our tombstones too, ya know, to modernize things...

Atheists are so sensitive... ooooo... "there's a cross and I don't want to see a cross because it will scar my eyes..." How pathetic.
A good argument for atheists would be that they don't want their tax dollars going to support the use of crosses for this in this program. But, wait a minute, the article clearly states that the program is PRIVATELY FUNDED so tax dollars aren't being used.
I object to abortions and my tax dollars are use to support programs that I find repugnant. Who is forcing their personal views down who's throat....

If you tried to put up a giant pentagram you'd have such an outrage. It sucks that this is so accepted but unfortunately this country is full of religious nonsense.

Eh....it's just a way of marking where someone died....personally yes, I think that if a person is Jewish, Muslim, or Pastafarian then they should have their respective symbols instead of a cross....

If Jesus lived in the 30's and 40's would the sign of christianity be a gas chamber?

Only if it get's run through a wood chipper and turned into something useful...
