Considering the "Wellworths" now open in Dorset, is the time now right for the corner-shop to make a come-back?

In years not too distant in the memory, companies sought to make money by buying up other companies, reducing staffing levels and increasing market share for the benefit of shareholders. Is the current economic climate now right for small buisness to flourish making sensible profit for small numbers of people over the ideal of corporate mass ?

Nice idea corner shops again..but the younger folks we would need to open these stores just arent prepared to work the hours needed..Thats why the few of these shops we have are all run by ethnic minorities..

Nice idea, but corner shops in their old form will probably never make a comeback. The small newsagents are gradually being taken over by franchises such as Premier, Costcutter and One Stop (There will definitely be one of them near you), in those in turn will be taken over by "the biggies" such Tesco and ASDA. The only way for small corner shops to survive is to become part of a franchise, it's as simple as that.

Source(s): My father has been a newsagents for 30+ years, (he's british not asian btw) and has recently become a Premier Store from a traditional shop.

    yes

but woollworths downfall was going into cd's and consumer electronics

it should have stuck with diy household stuff as it was years ago when my mum decorated the house she always went to woolies for paint sandpaper and a brush for sweets and clothes and toys shoe dye and replacement heel tips etc

modernization was the death of woolies

thats why wilkinsons has done so well but they are in danger of going the same way if they diversify too much
