Would it be good for NFL, NHL, NBA, and MLB schedule committees to work together?

Wouldn't it be a good idea for the different pro sports leagues to work together so that teams of different sports are in the same city on the same weekend as often as is possible? For instance, in April the NFL schedule comes out. Let's say for examples sake that Dallas plays at the Detroit Lions in the middle of October. So, the NHL and NBA take note. The NBA schedules the Dallas Mavericks at the Detroit Pistons the preceding Friday night. The NHL schedules the Dallas Stars at the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night. So you have Friday - Sunday, the city of Dallas vs. the city of Detroit.

Thoughts?

The NBA and NHL work together to create their schedules together and do their best to avoid what you are describing as in the past such events have been met with lacklustre support (people apparently like variety).

Also, keep in mind that NHL teams present the NHL with desired home dates and the teams they want to play on those dates based on their own fans preferences (you didn't think that Montreal and Toronto played 5 of their games on Saturdays by accident did you? Or Philly and the Rangers playing 5 weekend games? )

Yeah, there are some flaws with your system though.......first off, scheduling is a nightmare as it is, they also have to work around concerts/conventions etc.

Also.......the NFL schedule is actually predetermined to an extent........for example, you can forecast in 5 years from now what NFC teams the Detroit Lions would be playing against.....the dates are inconclusive but not the teams. Also, your conference opponents (aside from your own division of course) are based upon your record the previous season.

They may even do this is some cases when possible but I would dare say that schedulers have enough of a headache trying to accomodate all teams and making TV networks happy just concentrating on their own league, let alone trying to have the schedule coincide with other sports.......travel is also a concern.....when hockey teams go on a West Coast trip, they play the whole circuit of teams...etc.

    Good thought though.

The only practical application would be the NHL and NBA. In many cases I'm sure they already do sit down and coordinate their respective schedules but only because in many cases they share the arena. It takes 6 to 8 hours to convert from hockey to basketball and vice versa so obviously each league needs to know what the other is doing before scheduling games.

  • They already do this to a degree, but not to the extent that you're thinking of.

Scheduling 162-game seasons for baseball, 82-game seasons for basketball and the NHL, plus and NFL schedule (CFL to a degree here in Canada)...making the dozen or so national tv partners (all of whom have different needs, wants, etc.) happy, plus allowing for changes, plus other local events, holidays, etc...
