Maya's got a good list...try those first? Especially Full Moon and Fushigi Yuugi. (Those are both kind of long, but very good, and Full Moon's what I usually suggest to people who like Shugo Chara. And Fushigi Yuugi's a really good mix of action, romance, and humor.)

Uh, don't know if these would be x-ed out by the "don't look like they're five" part (since most of the characters are around 10-11 in these), but these are really good, IMHO:

Princess Tutu (this one is really, really good - I know it sounds uber girly. Try it anyway...it's actually pretty dark in places)

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (very actiony)

Gakuen Alice (funny! about a school for kids with ESP powers)

Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne (Has a phantom thief, like DN Angel. Albeit a female thief.)

xxxHolic (boy is haunted by spirits. goes to interdimensional witch for help)

Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle

The Twelve Kingdoms (the novel series is really good, too)

Revolutionary Girl Utena (TV series, not the movie)

Hayate the Combat Butler (Hayate no Gotoku) (for humor, mostly)

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (if you liked Elfen Lied. It's a really interesting horror anime with a Groundhog-Day-like loop going on. Very bloody, though.)

Azumanga Daioh and Pani Poni Dash and Doki Doki School Hours (Sensei no Ojikan) if you liked Lucky Star. They're pure humor anime.

If only she could do it without driving herself and everyone else crazy in the process...

REALLY REALLY REALLYY CUTE.♥ AND IT'S 24 EPISODES. IT'S SO FUNNY AND ROMANCTICCCC. WATCH IT, I REALLY RECOMMEND IT.

wow thats a lot of anime you've been watching. well if you like action anime, go for dragon ball z- but its over 20 episodes and doesn't have a lot of romance in it. but its a very good anime. also i would have said full metal alchemist- if you didn't give the "between 13-20ish episodes" rule. and i would have also suggested One Piece, but yea, all of those are way over 20 episodes long.
