8 week old puppy has diarrhea?

i bought an 8 week old border collie pup 5 days ago. i had to travel 200 miles to get him. he was £60 to buy and they had given us the wrong address therefore we arranged to meet them at a nearby garage thinking they would show us where the house was to see the pup, but they brought the pup with them!! we were told his parents were both collie but his litter was an accident and he was the last to go being the runt of the litter. i love him to bits he has the most lovely temprement, fantastic character etc, ive taken him to the vet for his first jab, also i have wormed him. flead him, microchipped him and insurered him. what is worrying is ive tried contacting the lady i got him from but with no avail!! plus he has started scratching and biting and has diarrhea i have changed him from his wet food to a quality complete mix do you think this is why or maybe hes ill please help. thanks

It could be because of the abrupt change in his diet, and the change of environment, and the long ride back home that has messed up his system a little. But, because he's so young, why don't you check with your vet and see what he thinks about a good quality dog milk substitute for him for a few more weeks. The solid food, alone, is probably too rich for it's system.

You sound like a very conscientious dog owner. You're doing good and giving it a good start. Just be sure to stay in consultation with your vet with any dog questions you may have, no matter how trivial they seem. He'll know better than any of us on Y!A what to do. Good luck with your dog. I've owned Border Collies. They are great dogs.

Diarrhea can mean a great deal of things, and some are very serious, or easily treated if caught in the first few signs, Like diarrhea. It can be coccidia, bacteria in the intestines, parvo, etc... and these are all very common in young puppies. Please if the diarrhea gradually gets worse for more than a day, or shows no signs of clearing up. He needs to go the vet. All the above mentioned are easily treatable if treated early. Wait, and well not only can it now become way more, serious a condition but can be thousands of dollars, if at all to save the puppy. I wish you the best of luck. But remove anything he has as far as treats or even to chew on, other than one sterile chew (if necessary toy) Just for now, until the diarrhea is clear, or until he is fine and healthy again. Most cases when a dog is switched rapidly from different foods he will become constipated not the other way around. Other than a huge dose of introducing "wet" food for the first times. Hope he gets well!!! :)

You will never find the BYB they were in for the money and that's it.Change of food any kind can cost it.You always have to change it slowly so there stomach can get use to the change.Do not change it again stay with what you give him now.Now the bad thing if he Still has it after 2 days take him to the Vet."parvo"Lord I hate this word is an other option. The scratching can come from the flea treatment most flea-treatments are not to be use to there are 12 weeks of age give him a bath with a mild shampoo oatmeal it will come the skin down.If this is not working take him to the Vet it could be Food allergies. You are a responsible owner and you will know when you need to take him.Good luck with you puppy and God bless

You probably will not find the people who sold you the dog, because they must not what you to. If that is the case and you said he has a good temperament then I wouldn't be to worried, just try and stick to the same foods. I like dry dog food or a mix of hard and soft. I don't like wet dog food it always made my dogs poop to messy. Just used it as a treat once in a while and when my old dog lost all her teeth. You can only do the best you can with the dog and I would take it back to the vet. But any diet change can cause those problems. Maybe he just has a flea on him. He could always pick one up just taking a walk.

Ok, firstly, the sudden change of diet could result in him having diarrhea,as his little stomach has to adapt to this new food.

Make sure that you're feeding him the proper quantities, because too much food at once can cause him to have a "runny tummy".

Sometimes when puppies are de-wormed, their stools may not be completely solid, due to the de-worming treatment.

As long as puppy's eating, drinking, sleeping and playing(important), then you don't really have to be worried.Observe him for a few days, if diarrhea continues, he might need veterinary help.

Chances are the diarrhea is from the change of food. It's common for a dog to get diarrhea from changing its food, but it almost always happens with pups that young. the scratching and biting could be from numerous things, but you can rule out fleas since you flead him. It could just be dry skin, or possible irritation from the flea medication, could even be from changing the food. If it continues maybe call your vet and ask for a professional opinion.

Changing foods can cause problems like diarrhea. However, the younger a dog is, the quicker the diarrhea can affect him; he can get dehydrated very quickly. I would get him to the vet pretty quickly, as diarrhea can be a sign of parvo.

Feed him boiled chicken and rice for a few days. Also try Kanicur tablets, tehy are OK for puppies. If you do that and the problem persists for more than 2 days, go to the vet.

if he is happy and eating i would not worry it will be the change in his diet, did you introduce the new food over 5 days it may have been the journey that has upset him or just a new enviroment if he develops blood in the poo defo get to the vet

k....the diarrhea is change of food!

Did you mix it little by little?

All diffrent at once is too much for a puppy....especially @ 8wks to handle!

if he bites.....it's fine b/c hes still very young but don't make this a habit....correct it when time comes!

Your home, I am sure. is a great home for the little baby pup!
