Plant gift Azaleas outdoors?

It will probably freeze to death over the winter. Most such gift azaleas are so-called "greenhouse azaleas", forced to bloom in a greenhouse at the right time for sale, and are usually quite beautiful yet not cold-hardy below 32F.

One approach is to plant it outside after last chance of frost. Then re-pot it and bring it inside before first chance of frost in the fall. See http://www.azaleas.org/faq.html#flo for how to care for it inside. Azaleas are usually not happy inside because of the low humidity and low light levels, but some folks are good at it.

Azalea plants only bloom once a year don't expect anything till this time next year.. Very rare that they would bloom again this year.. I have5 of them.

When you buy azalaes, they look very nice and pretty, but they are not so easy to look after, as they are a bit delicate. They like acid soils, so no alkaline soils, (no calcium) and like rich humus soil. They need quite a lot of water in summer and less in winter.
