Could Matt Gilroy technically play for the Rangers in these playoffs?

No, he needed to be under contract by the trade deadline.

However, he can be with the team, he can practice with the team, he can skate around the rink with Cup if the Rangers win, he can even get a Stanley Cup ring if the owners wants. (see Justin Abdelkader with Detroit last year)

    BUT

    - he cannot dress for a game

    - he cannot take part in the pre-game warm-up

    - he can not be voted a playoff share

    - he can not have his name inscribed on the cup

He can't, to be eligible for the playoffs a player must be under contract by the trade deadline. Toronto signed and used guys like hanson at the end of the regular season but he would not have been playoff eligible.

Remember Selanne last year, the comeback had to be before the deadline otherwise he would have been ineligible. Same discussion happens each year with Forsberg.

  • If he is under contract then he should be able to play not completely sure but I'm pretty sure.
