    No. of adult tickets (x):

    $12.00x + $6.00(1,500 - x) = $15,480.00

    2x + 1,500 - x = 2,580

    x = 1,080

    No. of student tickets:

    = 1,500 - 1,080

    = 420

    Answer: adult tickets, 1,080; student tickets, 420

    Proof ($15,480.00 was the total collection):

    = $12.00(1,080) + $6.00(420)

    = $12,960.00 + $2,520.00

    = $15,480.00

    First, make a problem set! :D

    Let the variable "a" represent the adults and "s" represent the students:

    #1: 12a+6s=15480 (this represents how much was collected from everyone

    #2: a+s=1500 (this is to represent the attendance)

    We need to find just one of the variables first. You want to know how many students attended the play, so we're going to find the value of "s".

    We'll start with "a+s=1500". To find s, we'll need to multiply both sides of the equation with 12, since we will subtract this equation from equation #1.

    12(a+s)=12(1500)

    12a+12s=18000

    Next

    12a+6s=15480 <-equation #1

    -(12a+12s) -(18000) (what we got from equation #2, distribute that negative sign! :D)

    We get:

    -6s=-2520 divide both sides by (-6)

    s=420

    420 students attended the play! ^_^

    Let x be the number of students who watched/attended the play

    so, the number of adults who attended the play can be represented as (1500-x)

    Working equation:

    6x+12(1500-x)= 15 480

    solving for x,

    6x+18 000-12x= 15480

    6x-12x= 15480-18000

    -6x = -2520

    x=420

    420 students attended the play

    x is the number of adult tickets sold and y is the number of student tickets sold

    12x + 6y = 15,480

    x+y=1500

    x = 1500-y

    12(1500-y) + 6y = 15,480

    18,000 -12y + 6y = 15,480

    18,000 - 6y = 15,480

    -6y = 15,480 - 18,000

    -6y = -2520

    y = -2520/-6

    y = 420

    420 students attended the play
