Small breed recommendations?

I have always had large dogs. The smallest was a husky mix that weighed in at 70lbs, the largest a 250lb St Bernard. We lost our St Bernard to old age just over a year ago. Since we have no pets and some time has passed, I agreed to look at a dog with my daughters. They are both asking for a small dog this time. All our animals come from shelters or breed rescues, but I have no personal experience with small dogs. Any recommendations as to breeds to start with?

Update:

I should specify that I'm looking for small breed suggestions that would be good for a relatively active family with young children, not just names of small breeds. My youngest is 6 and autistic, so a family friendly dog is a must. If there are breeds to avoid (one friend mention cairn terriers as being not so good with kids) that knowledge is also greatly appreciated.

I am the same way. Some smaller dog breeds I like are Staffordshire Bull Terriers and Border Terriers.

    Border Terrier:http://www.brandycarr.co.uk/gilbert_lucy/gilli_luc...

Both of these breeds are very sweet, loyal, and active like large dogs! If I ever get a small breed, it would be either a Staffie or Border Terrier.

Definitely a Morkie. Great with kids, hearty healthy, loving, playful, friendly, affectionate, loyal, easy to manage, train and handle.

Mine is going to be 5 yrs old in June. We got him at a yr and a half.

We have part mini-dachsund/part chihuahua and he is the greatest. I have had another doxie mix who was also very sweet. My mom always had them when I was little and they put up with us kids very well. I like dachsund mixes, pure dachs can get back problems older in life.

We have a corgi-chihuahua mix who is as sweet and wonderful as the day is long! She has that great corgi humor and playfulness and the chihuahua big-dog-in-a-little-body thing! We found her on Petfinder.com, they're a wonderful resource!
