Can dogs become incontinent when they get older?

My mom has a shepard mix who is about 8 years old and she has noticed recently that the bed she sleeps on is wet in the mornings. We were thinking maybe she just couldn't hold it through the night anymore. Or is this a medical issue? We're just not sure. Do you think she needs to see a vet? Or is it just because the dog is getting older? Opinions?

Older (more commonly altered) females can develop urinary incontinence sometimes due to a lack of estrogen. There are synthetic alternatives that can be given orally to help with this problem.

Please see your veterinarian so he/she can rule out other problems like a urinary tract infection as a cause for this problem. Usually UTI's involve posturing and urinating frequent small quantities, not leakage without posturing to urinate.

Well the dog is getting older and they can become incontinent. At the dogs age she still has some good years ahead of her, so take her to the vet and see if they have any meds to help her with the condition.

Yes, dogs can become incontinent with age, but you should talk to your vet because there are medications to help with that problem. Also, there could be an underlying, more serious problem causing the incontinence.

Dogs can get incontinent, especially older, spayed females. Visit you vet and discuss medications that can be given to help her out.

You will find that as your dog gets older they will having problems. Take her to the vet to make sure that she does not have any underlying problems. My dog is 16 years old and he has just started doing his droppings in the house occasionally so we have changed the time we feed him so that it is earlier and we only give him treats very early in the day just in case it upsets his stomach

My last dog started doing this as she got older. It would be best to take her to the vets just to make sure, but it sounds like she's just getting a bit older and losing a bit of bladder control. Bless her.

spayed females can actually pee a little in there sleep. Its not uncomon. But I would take to the vet to rule out any urinary medical conditions and they may be able to help with a solution. Good luck.

It's very common for old dogs.
