Cat extremely nervous/skittish. Highly unusual for him. What's wrong?

This morning, I noticed that my cat was very nervous/skittish. He is normally energetic and affectionate. I thought that maybe he had just been spooked. However, later, in the afternoon, he was still like this. He is acting very afraid, his eyes widen at the slightest sudden sound, even familiar ones. He is also very tense and jumpy. I am very concerned about him and wondering what is the matter with him. Any ideas?

Additional Details

We have now discovered that he seems to be absolutely TERRIFIED of people walking towards him while holding an object, even something harmless, like a backpack or a sweatshirt. His eyes widen, he looks panicked, and he flees when this happens.

Update:

I don't believe he was attacked, as there is no sign of any injury/pain.

Take your cat to a vet immediately! He acts like he has eaten something that is causing him to act as if he is hallucinating...some cats will get a chemical reaction from catnip. Could he have eaten a plant leaf...or been around one of the poisonious frogs...Stay in the cats view while someone else comes quietly from behind & thows a heavy towel or small blanket over him grab him before he can bolt from under the clothe & put him in a carrier & get him to an emergency animal clinic....Good luck....Alifare

You need to question any and everyone in the household to find out what happened if he is your cat .If you just found him or something maybe somehting traumatic happened to him you just have to walk up with treats or a toy so, the cat can associate people with good things

Thats sad. It looks as if someone attacked me, probably hurt him. Is he an outdoor cat? I have indoor/outdoor cats and I worry about what could happen to them when I let them out but it is so hard to get them to stay in.

It seems as, as sad as it is, someone may have beat the poor thing with an object, or maybe chased it. Something has happened to the poor thing, just have to have him regain trust.

He doesn't have to be injured in the attack, just sufficiently scared.

    I would definitely interview everyone.
