Meeko vs Scottie (Cat people please help)?

Hello, today I adopted a 4 month old kitten and I named him Meeko. I have another cat though who is about 2 years old named Scottie. They are both fixed males. They have met eachother already but everytime Meeko comes over to Scottie, Scottie hisses and runs away. I feel bad for the little guy because he is used to being with other cats playing around. On the other hand Scottie hasnt seen another cat in a very long time. Will Scottie meanness effect Meekos fun personality and how long will this hissing phase last?

Update:

thank you guys sooo much your answers have really helped! hear are the cats if you want to see them

They will but you're going about introducing them all wrong:

Put the new kitten in a room with its own food, water and litter box - a bedroom or bathroom would be best. Keep the new kitten completely separated from the existing cat for at least a few days. Put an old tshirt with the new kitten to get its scent on it, then give this shirt to the existing cat and then back again. This way they'll get used to eachother's scent.

The WORST thing to do is to just plunk a cat or kitten down in your home infront of your other cat. Cats are naturally territorial and introductions should be done SLOWLY. And being in a new home is overwhelming for the new animal. Let him get slowly used to your one room and THEN once he seems comfortable let him see the rest of your home and the existing cat.

This may take longer than it normally would take since you've now got your existing cat on alert to the "intruder".

Do be sure to have this new kitten checked out at a vet before you allow it any interaction with your cat. If it's coming from a shelter it's most likely already going to have been tested for Feline Leukemia - a deadly and incurable disease. If this is not the case then this test is a MUST as FeLv is contagious among cats.

Male cats are dominate.Scottie is used to be the domintive male and when this new cat comes along, he feels his throne is being threatened and the other cat is trying to take away Scottie's dominance. The best thing i learned is have feeding periods. Feed both cats at the same time so they get used to eachother's presence. Scottie would be too focused on his food than to feel threatened. A cat's ego can't be hurt unless something really bad happens. When my cat was a baby, he was abused. He used to probably be a really, non-meanicing, furball. People hurt and broke his leg and it grew over into a weird position. He stalks instead of walking. We adopted him in this state and he is mean and skiddish now.

no. they will eventually learn to like eachother. it has happened to my cats. i got a new kitten and my first cat that i had would totally freak out and hiss at him. i also felt bad. but then after a few months or so, they started to like eachother and now they play all of the time and even clean eachother. you just have to give Scottie some time to get used to Meeko. everything will be ok.

well it all depends. my mother in law has a Siamese cat that is 7 yrs old and believes itself to be the queen. when two kittens moved into her environment she was hostile for a good 2 weeks and it took about 3 more weeks for her to let them eat around her so it is the personality of the cat. As long as Scottie is a friendly cat the adjustment wont take long but if he is aggressive already it will take a while. in the mean time don't forget to play evenly with the both of them

  • It's okay. Scottie will do that for a while. But he'll get used to Meeko. My older cats done that to my other cat when I got him. But now there used to him and don't bother him. It will be ok. Hope that helps!

I'd give it a week and he should be done hissing and playing with the new kitty. It took my kitties 3/4 days to get along, now they act like brothers!
