Cat went to the bathroom on my couch?
We adopted my cat last October from a rescue shelter. She is now about 2.5 years old. She came already litter-box trained and has been using it just perfectly - until today. My fiance came home to find she had made a mess on the couch (both kinds).
We clean her litter box every single day and change the litter at least once a month - why could she have done this?? Is she sick? Should I take her to the vet? She doesn't seem to be acting sick, but this is not normal behavior for her at all....

This is an indication that something is amiss.
I would take the cat to the vet for a urinalysis with culture and sensitivity as well as blood work.
Most likely the culture will be negative for infection but it is the only way to rule out if an infection is present.
It will also illustrate which antibiotic will kill the organism if indeed there is an infection.
Blood work will alert the doctor if there is diabetes or kidney issues.
Many times young cats develop inappropriate elimination due to stress or discomfort.
Cats can form crystals and stones in their bladder which traumatizes the urinary tract.
These cats benefit from a therapuetic diet which balance the pH of the urine and dissolve or inhibit stone/crystal formation.
Adding cosequin and omega fatty acids help control the inflammation these minerals cause in the bladder.
Cosequin lubricates the bladder wall and omega fatty acids disrupt the inflammatory process.
Some cats do well will daily amitriptyoline which has anti inflammatory properties.
It also helps to control stress.
Feliway diffusers are also a way to soothe a stressed cat.
Take the cat to the vet to rule out UTI.
Most likely due to her age she will be diagnosed with feline lower urinary tract disease or feline idiopathic cystitis.
Both of these ailments are painful and decreasing inflammation is the way to manage it.
Even though she appears fine the inappropriate elimination is a warning sign that something is wrong!
Good luck

Cats don't generally act sick in the way we think of as sick. It's instinct to act like they're healthy even when they aren't. The way they show us that they aren't feeling well is through behavioral changes, which include inappropriate peeing and pooping.
So yes, I think your kitty should see the vet.
It can also be caused by stress. Did anything happen that could have bothered your kitty?
If your vet can't find a physical cause, then it's possible there's an emotional cause. Your vet can help with that too. You can use Feliway to help calm her and try to remove or reduce whatever the stressor is.
This is one of the few ways she can tell you that something is wrong. She didn't do it on purpose or out of anger, in case you considered that. There are tips here for getting out the pee smell: http://www.getridofthings.com/get-rid-of-cat-urine...
good luck! I hope she'll be fine.

She may not be comfortable with her surroundings. You did adopt her and she may have had issues before you adopted her. You need to tell her it is bad but do not spank her. You also should speak to the ones at the shelter and ask of her history before hand. What can they tell you about her and why she was given away. I would not spank her and I would not roll up a paper or use anything to show her you can hurt her. Also, I would talk to the Vet to get some advice about cats in perticular that may have been abused. Go on line and do some research on how to train a cat. I hope you find your sollution.

Have her checked by potential of a vet to be sure there's a scientific clarification why she is doing this. at that element, if her heath is sturdy, the vet could propose some concepts for you. be sure the muddle container is very sparkling, cats could be very specific and a few won't use the container if there is even one mess in there. additionally, there could desire to be 2 boxes in line with cat (sounds insane, does not it?).

She may have a behavioral problem. Or she may need to have her kidneys checked out.
