Can anyone help me with high maintenace cat?

Love him to pieces, but he's driving his brother and me, his owner, crazy. He needs tons of attention and can be quite vindictive if he doesn't get what he wants. Trying to give him extra time and attention and maintain my patience. Help...

Update:

Too funny Mary, he's my favorite too. I have been spreading bird seed on the porch roof so he can watch the birds.

I have 5 cats and only 1 needs constant attention. I set aside a time each day for what I call "play time." I sit down and toss toys and play with mice and feathers. I have found that my "needy" cat looks forward to this each day and requires less one on one attention this way. I have also found that with the nicer weather just opening windows keeps my cats distracted. They love sit for hours and watch and listen to the outdoors. Just be patient. I have to admit my "needy" cat is my favorite.

Well, he's trained you to give him the attention by now. Treats won't help because that's a reward.

We have a year old cat that loves people but can play rough. Whenever he gets out of hand we give him a gentle scruffing (just lifting the skin behind the neck and giving it a gentle shake -not lifting him up off the ground), take him to his room (my husbands office) and he gets a time out. When we open the door (usually a few minutes later) he's all sorry and lovey dovey. He acts very good after that. He's also used to the squirt bottle and avoids it at all costs.

Maybe when your cat is being annoying, give him a squirt on the behind with the squirt bottle to make him understand that the behavior is not appropriate (like getting on the counters). You'll be very surprised how fast they learn about that squirtbottle! Sometimes I keep the bottle on the mist setting so the water never really hits them but it makes the hissy sound.

I make a sound like "Hey!" when I spray it, now all I have to do is say Hey! and he takes off.
