If the below links are right, the new for 09 Night Train is a beast for sure. I'm not personally a Mossberg fan, but with a good reputation for accuracy and having the full kit from the factory like that, it isn't a bad deal. I do think that the price of $900 as listed would be high, since the Barska Scope isn't a top tier offering (they do have a good reputation though) and I've seen bare ATRs at WalMart for $260. Harris is top of the line for bipods, but are retail for less than $100 most places.

308 is a good cartridge for hunting, target shooting--even varmints if you choose to, just don't expect to take coyote pelts home. If you found a Night Train for closer to $750 than $900 that would be better.

Similar rifles would be the Stevens/Savage entry level rifles at about $325 for bare, some Remington ADLs for near $450 at Cabela's and even WalMart, and Tikka T3s for $500 most places that have them. Sometimes you can wander in someplace and find a reral bargain, like a CZ in 6.5 Swede for $600 or a Howa Stainless / Laminate for $550. I even saw a Browning A-Bolt for $525, but that was for a 243 WSSM. I personally like 30-06 given a choice, I just grew up around them and it is still my favorite cartridge to shoot and load for.

If you chose to get a bare rifle then you could spend money on a scope like a Nikon or Leupold, but since the Barska is a 60mm and high power the Barska might be OK. If this were a deer/other hunting gun I wouldn't use such a large scope though.

I think you are asking a lot of a $200 or less rifle (groups of 1-2"). I don't think most Mosin Nagants will give you that kind of accuracy. More like 2-3" at best. May I recommend a Stevens model 200, which is in the mid to high $200 range. Frankly, if you want any modern bolt action rifle you are not going to find one in any decent condition for under 2 bills.

Your going to get a lot of opinions here....

Best long range shots? Large game.... if the largest game you will take are white tail deer, smaller to medium size elk and smaller to medium size bears then consider using a rifle chambered in .308 or 30-06....

About the Mossberg 100-ATR... Night Train... That rifle is an economy rifle for the budget minded... If you expect excellent results with sub MOA accuracy in a Competition target shoot then you will be disappointed.... For taking deer at reasonable distances it will do the job.....

Also consider the Mossberg 100-ATR scoped combo in 30-06.... These were on sale in my area for $329 around the holidays....

Another decent economy rifle is the Stevens Model 200 in .308 or 30-06... The scope is included with these also..... These are pretty decent and retail for under $400 also....

I know you are looking for a bolt action but you might want to consider the Marlin 572 (if you can find one). It's a pump - I would never recommend any semi-auto as they get dirty pretty quick, are a pain in the butt to clean and are not nearly as reliable as a bolt or pump.

If you are looking for long range shooters... forget .22 calibers and think of the 308 or magnums (.300 Weatherby - it will kick your **** or .338 Lapua which will kick it even harder). These two rifles think nothing of reaching out to 1000 meters and are the two choices of marksmen belonging to the PA 1000 yard club.

7 mm rem magnum r700 if you are willing to spend a good chunk of money. Cost is around 400 to 450 ammunition varies. It is not a plinking gun.

Any marlin 22 if you are going to be firing a ton of rounds. I own one and it is ridiculously accurate. cost is 200 for gun and $30 for 500 rounds.

Mosin nagant if your not willing to spend a lot and you want something with a little power. The recoil isn't that bad and the sound of it is amazing. Its accurate enough. 100 for rifle $10 for 20 good rounds. do not buy surplus.

I would look at the savage in 270 or 30/06

for your first gun, get a .22 man, you'll thank me grab a marlin 981T i bought one and right out of the box 40 yrds ironsights it was better than me and fun to shoot - my first marlin, the only marlin I've ever shot, it was a load of fun, out of box it outperformed Remington rifles no competition
