Which Assault Rife should I buy?

Looking for an assault rifle.

Purpose: avid shooter/also a good gun to have if you even needed protection

I was thinking between an AR15, M4 carbine, and Mini-14. I am looking for Advantages and Disadvantages to theses and any other assault rifles/carbine suggestions. THANKS!

PLEASE NO ANTI-GUN COMMENTS - I don't care if you are anti-guns, I'm looking for advantages and disadvantages to assault rifles, not your lousy opinion. Take the guns away from honest American's and then see how safe you would be. The 2nd Amendment was also put in place as a check on big government.

I happen to be a big fan of the Ruger Mini 14 rifles.... They are decently accurate, very reliable, easy to clear a jamb when the occasional jamb happens, are less costly that AR15 rifles and last of all --- They are polite looking....

Polite? -- Yup - Polite!.... I am of the opinion that if the poop hits the fan you do not want a rifle that draws attention to itself... Others want bad a$$ looking guns... I prefer guns that don't look "bad" when trying to extricate myself from a bad social situation.... From a short distance a wood stocked Mini 14 looks like a semi harmless .22 rifle to the untrained eye....

Yes I do own several AR15 rifles.... I don't know what my big attraction with them is -- I bought them, used em a couple of times and let them sit in the safe most of the time.... I prefer the Ruger rifles I have much better....... The Mini feels better in the hand and is an excellent 125 yard shooter with open sights...

Let's stop using the term "assault rifle" shall we?

It's a scary word dreamed up by a neurotic Socialist (Hitler) and used today by neurotic Socialists and the news media who are both anti-gun. Using this term just fuels the fear.

An actual Assault Rifle is actually capable of full-auto fire and I don't think that's what you are talking about here.

An AR-15 is nearly the same as the M4 with different components. It's probably the best and most adaptable rifle system ever developed and it keeps getting better.

The Mini 14 is a solid rifle known for it's reliability over accuracy, modeled on the M-14 action. While it's a good little carbine, it's no AR.

OK. First off, you are not looking for an Assault Rifle as they are select fire to either 3-round bursts or full auto. What you meant to say is either AR-15 (Armalite Model 15) or tactical semi-auto rifle.

That said, an AR is an AR is an AR. The M4 is just the carbine length AR-15. Any brand you get (with the exception of Olympic Arms) should be fine: Rock River, Bushmaster, Colt, DPMS....and the list goes on. They all use parts that have the same mil-spec and are interchangeable. Just get the one with the setup you want of get the cheapest one and put on the parts you want.

A Mini-14 is a fine semi auto weapon that uses the same caliber as the AR, but is not as accurate at longer distances but much le$$ and a whole lotta fun! If your funds are limited and the max distance you would shoot is 150 yards...get a Mini-14 Ranch Rifle and have a blast.

well an AR-15 and M4 for us 'regular' 'non-military' 'civilian' people is an 'AR-15'. So if you want one get one, or I would like an m-14 myself. Big bullet, accurate. The m-14 or the mini would be plenty for self defense, or even hunting.

    Advantage to the AR-15,

    it's a gun.

    Disadvantage:

Morons call it an 'assault rifle', and if comrade obama succeeds in his plot to ban guns (him or that jackass eric holder) they will probably be banned once again. AND back to the dark age we go.

    M-14 advantage:

    It's cool

    got a big bullet

and I really don't think you could call it an 'assault rifle' thus if there was a ban, it could probably dodge it.

    Disadvantages:

None that I could think of.

An M4 is an ar-15. These guns are not assault rifles. I don't like that term since it's only purpose of existing is to scare the gun ignorant. The name does not properly distinguish these guns. If you are getting an AR the only disadvantage is it is dirt and sand sensitive. It is a very accurate gun and parts are still easy to get. Will need awhile to fully understand how it operates and how to clean it.

I would go with the M4. It is good for both indoor situations as well as picking stuff off at 300 yards. I have one with a medium range compact scope. you could use that for anything practically. the ar-15 it too long to use indoors in my opinion. The mini-14 is a good competitor to the m4 though. I guess it depends on personal preference of style.

Screw the .223 crap! .308 is all you need. look up the Springfield Socom 16. All My AR does now days is look pretty in my safe. Its Accurate dependable, ZERO chance of someone getting up after being hit with a 150 grain bullet. Also great for hunting North American Game. The downside: expect to pay $1,500-2,000 for one. And Ammo can be expensive. This little rifle Is trusty to have at your side. If you can get over the price. Its totally worth it.
