why is my kitten's eyes closed?

ever since like last week or the week before, ive been noticing that my kitten's eyes are closed, due to some dried 'sleep?' (same stuff us humans get in our eyes). every day i wipe her eyes with a warm, damp, cottonball to wipe the stuff away and then use a dry cottonball to pat her eyes dry. she sleeps outside when its nice out with my other cat and the cats who frequent the house on a daily basis.

is it possible that shes getting this from her 'bed' (a box of straw), the ever-changing northwest pa weather patterns, the visiting cats, or something else?

i plan on taking her to the vet soon.

Update:

fyi my 2 cats sleep in the house when its supercold outside. she looked like she was around 3 months old when i 'found' her in august after i came home from work. she's fed, cared for, litter box-trained. shes seeing the vet on friday.

I was reading about pet grooming and grooming cats and groomer have to check the pet's eyes especially if they tear a lot. They said that cats who's eyes have that runny dried stuff from their eyes a lot might have lashes that grow into their eyes and irritate them. Perhaps this is the case. If so, the cat will have to go to the vet. But since you're taking her to the vet she should be fine. They'll tell you what's wrong.

It sounds like it could be an eye infection or upper respiratory infection. It can spread to the other cats. Isolate her and get her to the vet. Right now it may just be some eye drops, but if it gets worse it could be antibiotics and more expense. Fast is important.

You need to bring that kitten INDOORS. Its probably way to cold out there for her to be out there so shes getting an upper respitory infection. God I don't know how people can just throw their pets outdoors.

sounds like she's sick. i had a kitten with eyes like that; she wasn't technically mine, she was a stray but i used to feed her and gave her a box for a home with one of my bed sheets, she died.
