Does anyone take Amitriptyline?
I am going to be starting for migrane prevention today.
I was taking A LOT of propranolol and it wasn't doing the trick, so my doc switched me. I know about the side effects, but I would like to ask ppl who are on it for migranes, if they have lost weight, or gained?
Thanks!
Uhm... so did you gain weight or lose weight?
Ive had migranes for 11 years and have seen a few different docs, many tests, and re did an MRI and no idea why I get them.
I have tried multiple triptans, and none worked. I understand all the meds I;m taking, just weight gain worries me. Thats all I needed to know, I hope your headaches clear up:)

I had been having migraines for about a year when I went to the doctors. . My headaches were very sensitive to movement, and still are. My headaches were not very severe when I first began getting them, but they became these horrible migraines, one of which lasted more than 24 hours. During this migraine, it hurt so bad that I could not chew food because that movement of my head hurt it too badly. So I had to eat applesauce and yogurt. But it was maybe 6 months ago when I went to my family doctor. I told him about my headaches, and he had me taking one 5mg tablet of amitriptyline. It worked like a miracle. But after a little while, my body became immune to it and it no longer worked. So my mom called my doctor and he said to take two pills. Same thing happened again, it worked great but then went right back to where I started, and I was having bad migraines every day. I am now up to taking 5 of those pills. So I am taking 25mg of amitriptyline. My doctor said that I can go up to taking ten, 5mg tablets.
After about 6 months after first seeing my family doctor, my mom decided to take me to a neurologist. I just went for the first time just a few days ago. I had an EEG test done. And haven't gotten the results back yet. But the neurologist said we need to figure out what is causing my migraines, and that medicine is not always the only answer.
So she kept me on the 25mg of amitriptyline. And she also put me on a special diet. For the next six weeks, she told me to not eat any chocolate, cheese, processed meats, and msg. She thinks that I might be allergic to something that I'm eating. And that is what has been causing my migraines.
She also told me that if I start to get a headache, it might help to take a hot shower. And if it still hurts, then take Excedrin and Benadril. Or Tylenol and Benadril. I'm not sure which one it is, but I think it is Tylenol, that my doctor said does not have caffeine in it, like the other one. And so I should swallow the Tylenol with a sip of caffeine. To make it work better. And I am also still taking Amitriptyline 25mg every night.
But if you haven't already been to a specialist about your migraines, I highly reccommend that you do.
Oh, and I have not noticed any side effects at all.
And if it makes a difference, with my dosage and everything. I'll tell you that I'm 16 and weigh about 110. So that might make a difference in the mg's that you can take.
Well, I hope I was helpful! :)
Oh, and good luck!

Hi, I have the dreaded illness. I say 'dreaded' because there are no real treatments or cures. Some drugs help for certain, I take morphine sulphate because I also have another nervous system related illness therefore I don't really know whether it helps with fybromyalgia or not. I also take pregabalin, a drug that helps pain spasms and an anti-inflammatory drug called diclofenac. A pain management specialist recently told me to stop all the drugs because they don't help fybromyalgia yet there are many doctors who would argue against her. I would too. When I have a bad pain period or sudden attack, pregabalin definately helps, as does morphine. I have experimented, therefore have no doubts. As far as amitriptyline goes, it is bad for sex drive yet it does help with sleep unless the pain is very bad. I was on 75mg per day but couldn't cope with the side effects. I am sorry if this sounds a little on the dark side, I have been suffering a long period of intense pain. I hope that yours is not so bad. The most difficult thing is constantly being reminded by doctors that they have no treatments or answers. Best regards Steve Costello
