Upgrading RAM on a Toshiba Sat A105 S2021?

It came with 512MB DDR2, max expansion is 2 GB (manual). Can I add 1GB memory to the unused slot while leaving the original DDR2 in its slot and have 1.5 useful RAM? SOmeone who may know about it told me it is better to keep the slots symmetrical, using 2 of 512 . Or just use one slot with larger capacity. Does it make a difference if the 2 slots are used with different sized RAM?

It is always better to use identical types of RAM. Although there aren't any losses with using 2 different sticks, you are at a disadvantage because you're missing out on possible speed.

I'd upgrade to 2x1GB sticks if I were you.

If money is tight then just get one. It shouldn't be to much of a deal.
