Can you sue if someone cuts your childs hair without permission?
Hello,
I come home from work today and noticed that my son hair got butchered today by his teacher. I did not give permission, nor did the school call to see if he could get this done. Someone told me that I could, especially with it being done on school grounds. If anyone knows if this is true or not, please let me know. And if anyone knows of any good lawyers in Detroit, or in Michigan, please let me know. Serious replies only. Thanks.
Hello all and thank you for those that left serious replies. My son is 12 years old and upset about his hair. I think that anyone parent would be upset if someone did this to their child's hair. The school is closed and I will take care of this matter on Monday morning. But thanks again to those that left sensible feedback and understand that right is right and wrong is wrong! I am not looking for any type of settlement. I just wanted to know if you could sue about something like this, because someone told me that you could. That is why I came here to yahoo answers to see if it was true or not, that's all. Thanks again.

i would be in the office first thing monday morning and would not leave until i had a d@mn good reason for these actions. as far as suing the teacher goes probably not a battle worth fighting. it is only hair and it will grow back hopefully while the teacher is looking for another job

If a school teacher cut a child's hair without permission or direct necessity (ie. chewing gum in the hair), she has assaulted your child. I would be calling the school first thing Monday morning and asking for the teacher's side of the story (plus any witnesses) and then laying a complaint with the principal and the school board. (Kids do lie, btw, so make sure you speak to all the witnesses that were present.)
And if I wasn't happy with the resolution, I would talk to the police about the laying of assault charges (get your son to write down everything that happened today and have him put down the names of everyone present and have him sign/date it....and take photographs of his hair and print them out). Don't have his hair fixed until you can get it photographed and documented as evidence.
Good luck!

That is ridiculous! I cant believe that the teacher would do that!! I'm not sure about suing them, but I'm sure if you talked to a Lawer you could arrange it. I think a better solution is to talk to the Principal of the school, and complain about the teacher. I'm sure that he (or she) doesn't know about this, or the teacher would have fired instantly. It's actually pretty serious, and although it doesn't sound so bad, someone cutting your child's hair without permission is pretty dispicable.

If it wasn't out of necessity, I imagine you can. Otherwise, if he had gum or something else in his hair and cutting it out was the only way to get it out then there is no sense in even being upset about this. It's just hair and it will grow back,

What was the reason the teacher cut his hair???? Gum in it, matted or full of knots???Big deal it grows back. Find something important to fight about.
Seems like there is more to this than your son is stating...why is the big question and just take him to the hairdresser and have it fixed....he needs to be worried about studies, and not fashion.

Why did the teacher cut your sons hair. Maybe you should get both sides of the story because I really do not think somebody is going to cut your sons hair.

It sounds like you better find out the whole story before you start your court battle. How do you know his teacher did it? Under what circumstances did s/he do it? Is it possible that your son could even in your most remote imagination not tell the truth? Find out the facts before you decide to count your money from a lawsuit.

well, that wasn't very nice of the teacher. but i read about a case like this, and you'll never get taken seriously in court. (The guy had 10 inches and got it butchered down to 1/4 inch or something) don't worry--his hair will grow back. But maybe it wasn't the teacher--maybe it was another kid and he didn't want to get that kid in trouble. hope this has been helpful

I don't know much about lawyers and suing and court and stuff...but I can't imagine someone being sued over a hair cut. I'm sure you can...but it's no necessary.
Although what they did was wrong, so you should maybe contact them or call and complain.
Hope that helps!

Why don't you first question all parties involved and find out what happened exactly. I'll bet you find out that it was your own kid who let them do it. In that case, you have to point the finger at yourself. its your responsibility to teach your kid common sense.
Apparently the adults involved didn't think this was such a big deal (and I agree). You are entitled to feel differently, and maybe they should have had the sense to contact you first.
Again...someone's parent failed their responsibility to teach common sense.
but a lawsuit? ...calm down. Frivolous lawsuits do nothing but cost the rest of us money.
If you find that there was in fact some neglegence, and your child was against what was happening or...maybe the teacher is a psycho...then yes I'd say you have ground to stand on.
But...ask and find out what happened first. think about what you put into action...you could cost someone their livelyhood...over something as stupid as hair.
