What damage may I have done to my car?
Firstly I must state I am a complete idiot in understanding cars so you may have to explain in easy terms. I have a 2l petrol Citreon C5 '02 plate. I just recently got an antipollution fault warning on my dash. I put it into a local garage but they recommended I go to a main dealer to read off the error code from my car in detail. Anyway.... as I got home I opened the boot to find the oil I topped up my car with and realised that i'd put half a litre of Gastrol GTX Diesel oil in my car which again is a petrol car. Think i've found the source of the problem. What do you think i may have damaged if at all, and do you think a simple oil change will do the trick?

Hi: First off Let me assure you that Diesel oil will not harm a gas engine.
I have a collection of pre 1980 british cars and run diesel oil in all of them because a number of years ago the manufacturers removed some lubricants that used to be in regular oil but are not used today.
The older engines needed Molly etc to help with the valves etc.
Having said all that , yes, that may be what set off your warning light as to-days cars monitor pollution etc that they did not monitor in the 1980's.
Changing the oil may re-set the light but i doubt it.
Once you change the oil you will have to get a dealer to re-set the codes and that should clear up the problem.
Hope this helps

Diesel oil in your car would not be the source of the problem. Your car cannot tell what kind of oil has been put in the engine, only if too low a level is maintained or pressure.
No damage and you can await your next oil change as normal.
The light on the dash is typically tied into sensors located on the engine or exhaust system that help measure emmisions and ensure the engine burns it's gas cleanly.
