The Winchester M70 uses a forged rectangular Receiver / Box assembly which makes them inherently stiff and are therefore considered very good actions to build on and the pre-64 Model 70 is a standard to measure by still. Companies that make similar actions are Howa / Weatherby Vanguard, and CZ 550. The CZ uses a Mauser action Claw Extractor-controlled round feed, and is one of the few that still uses those. They are prized as African hunting rifles (BRNO is made by CZ).

Remington and most other major makers use a piece of round stock to begin their manufacturing from. Each manufacturing type has it's strengths and in reality any type rifle can be made accurate with the right ammo. So, for actual equality to the Model 70 the CZ meets and in someways surpasses it. For 'comparable' rifles the mid level Remington, Brownings,Rugers match best. Sako would be just a touch ahead, similar to the CZ, but a top Sako is $1400 plus.

The new FN made Model 70 is now available, and they are much better the the last few years of production rifles that came from the New Haven plant.

I've shot 375 H&H CZs and the rifle is solid as a bank vault, handsome and rugged, getting one in 338 Mag would be an excellent choice.

That depends...Which model 70 are you talking about? Pre-64? Post-64? Classic? FN made?

If you are looking at the new FN made model 70, you are going to be looking at other $1000-$1400 rifles.

If you are looking at the Post-64 or Classic, you will have to look at $800-$1000 rifles.

If you are looking at the Pre-64....Well, then you need to be looking at other classic rifles; FN Supreme, Browning Safari, H&H Mausers, etc.

The Winchester Model 70 is one of my all time favorite actions. It has my favorite safety on it. Prior to the new FN model 70, the Winchesters had, what I consider to be the BEST hunting trigger. It is reliable in all weather conditions. I've had Remington 700 triggers freeze up on me in harsh conditions. Now, I may be biased as my hunting role models(both grand fathers) only owned model 70s. I did buy quite a few Remington 700s but no longer own any of them, other than the Wife's but it came with her.

As for the choice of calibers, you have a broad spectrum there in the .308 to .338 Win Mag, unless we are talking .308 Norma but then we would be talking custom rifles. While a .308 is sufficent for many hunting situations, it is a pop gun compaired to the .338 Win Mag. The .338 Win Mag is a great mid-bore. It offers a very respectible amount of kinetic energy for the amount of recoil. However, .338 can be very, VERY intimidating to new shooters and can cause a flinch to develop.

Source(s): You would be suprised how many used .338s you can pick up after Elk season...generally low round count too.

Supposedly they are going to be making the M70FW returned in South Carolina yet for an analogous severe high quality easy rifle i could propose Browning's A-Bolt or X-bolt fantastically the Micro Hunter sort. And for under the slightest bump in balk they provide it in 7mm-08 Rem. plenty extra desirable medium/vast interest cartridge. yet another to look into could be Remington's sort seven-hundred Mountain rifle (or the type 7) returned same cartridges are attainable. or you will in basic terms ought to maintain cruising the used racks on the community gunshops for a M-70 Featherweight.

    In what respect?

The model 70 is mainly known for it's 3 stage wing style safety. The closest thing that resembles it is the Ruger 77.

Personally, I'd rather have the Winchester !
