Is the smell from dirty laundry and unwashed dishes in messy teenage bedrooms hazardous to health?
There is an odor from dirty socks, t shirts, jeans, bed linen, and dirty dishes that accumulate in a particular boys bedroom for weeks on end before mom can convince him to clean it all up. Then it starts all over again. I am wondering if breathing that odor all night long is harmful. What is that smell anyway?

I am surprised your home isn't overrun by a myriad of bugs!
Past time to sit your son down with what the house rules are and make sure he follows them.
If he doesn't, 1 thing I found that works is throwing all the dirty clothes onto the front yard where all of his friends and neighbors see it. Due to the embarrassment you usually only have to do this once.
As for the dishes.....eating in the bedroom should not be allowed.

I have found closing the bedroom door helps, doesn't solve the problem, some guys don't mind living in filth, feel sorry for the girl who marries them. I also, when disgusted enough take the car keys and hide them, amazing who the room get picked up and the laundry done.

"That smell" is bacteria from the dirty clothes/dishes, sweat from the socks and undershirts, unmentionable in his boxers/briefs and mildew/mold on unwashed drinking glasses or unfinished food.
No, it's not hazardous, its just stinky.

Try talking a military approach to his uncleanliness. Anything unclean. Throw it outside. He'll learn.
