The only reason for life is to reproduce? Spiritually speaking, other lives are worthless?

The question was "Why Is Gay Marriage Bad". It went on to say that the reason for the question was a conversation with someone who believed it to be wrong on religious grounds. Here is the answer that I want to know about:

"The biological goal of life revolves around reproduction. If you are gay, there is no point in your life. To me, atheists should be MORE anti gay than Christians. Christians believe in an afterlife, and another chance. Atheists don't. So a gay life is a waste to them. The purpose of life is to reproduce.

I understand that these are just the words of one person. Are there other out there who think that the only purpose someone can have in life is to reproduce? If you think this, please say so; I'm intereted to know how many people feel this way, and if I have been missing something.

Do you feel this way?

Homosexuals will not reproduce and evolution will phase them out.

Dysfunctional human gene destroyed. End of story.

Vic has a good point. I wonder what the ratio of gays to straights were hundreds, thousands of years ago? I wonder if that ratio is decreasing or increasing, or staying relatively the same?

Of course I'm sure vic has the answer to this, as his knowledge is greatly superior to mine.

If he is correct, that would mean being gay might possibly NOT be due to a defective gene, but more along the lines of 'something in the water'.

No. I don't feel this way. Have you thought about the possibilities of straight couples who cannot naturally have babies? There is a great number of people with reproduction deficiency. Can church not like them either?

Life has multiple folds of purpose and significance. Reproduction is just only one of them. Why would people have different interests and careers, for we are all different. Everyone's mission to this life is different too. For some people, it's reproduction only. For others, it's something else. Other life forms are worth and important for human beings too; think about eco system. Human cannot live alone by human species. If our life is only for reproduction purpose, then how boring the life is, without much to learn or to interact. people can just lock themselves up in a room just multiple themselves without doing anything else.

Every form of life is precious not just important. When you embrace the ideas of all the life forms are precious, you enjoy life much better with a more open dimension.

Biologically speaking, yes, our only goal is to reproduce. But not producing doesn't make someone's life pointless. In the animal world reproduction is their only task; but obviously our world is very different. Because we have other tasks BESIDES reproduction: education, careers, interacting and connecting with others, etc. one does not need reproduction to have a life with a "point".

When I was once younger I sat within the entrance and had pleasant rides. Now I am headed might be extra in the direction of the center, however my eyes are nonetheless open, and by the point I am a senior I would possibly simply sit down within the again and simply experience looking all people else have the time in their existence.

First off, we need to denote that purpose is an intelligent creation. We want purpose, and we create purpose. Purpose is an abstract idea. It's also one hell of a motivator.

We can claim the purpose of life (in the broadest sense of the word) is to reproduce.

However, we give our own lives as humans purpose. Atheists generally tend to live for themselves and for others. We don't need to reproduce to give our own lives purpose.

I've only ever seen one person who claimed not to be religious use the "Gays are evil because they don't reproduce" argument. By the end of the argument, I did not believe his stated lack of religious convictions.

The idea runs awfully close to the justification for Nazi genocide. Confusing the "is" produced by science with "ought"

Since homosexual behavior occurs in many species, it obviously has a place in the natural order.

It is the biological goal of life to ensure the propagation of a species. But this does NOT require that every member of a group be reproductive.

There are always a fair number of non-reproductive members in any group in nature. They are not worthless, nor are they purposeless.

This is (one of) the truck-sized holes in the logic of the person you quoted.

And, since homosexual behavior is as old as humans are, I am afraid Prometheus Unsound's logic is living up to his/her name.

Actually the purpose of life is survival, reproduction is a part of that. I don't really see Atheists killing gays based on their sexual preference, either.

"The purpose of life is to reproduce"

Does this even need a response?

I'm going to assume the person was not thinking when they gave the answer.

Of course not. I'm a straight, married woman and I wont be having kids. I don't believe that my or my husband's life is worthless.
