17 weeks pregnant, laid off, applying for Medicaid?

Hi All,

Ok, I'm 17 weeks pregnant with my first and just found out last week that I'm being laid off till at least January 2010 (could be permanent won't know till the end of the year...uggg!). Tomorrow is my last day, and I'll be losing my health insurance after then. I have a great OB but they do not accept medicaid so I have to switch to a new one. This afternoon will be my last appt with my current OB. I've been told it take 30-45 days to be approved for Medicaid here in Indiana, so what do I do about scheduling a new OB appt? Do I schedule one and then tell them my Medicaid is pending or do I have to wait until I'm officially approved? Help...I'm new to all this!

Have you looked into COBRA? That way you could keep your current OB. If the cost is ridiculous (which it usually is), then i would try to get a new OB booked as soon as possible. The farther you get into your pregnancy, the harder it is to get a new one to take you. Medicaid will pay the previous 3 months of medical bills once you are approved, so the new doctor can just bill them after you're approved. Just let the new doctor know that you have applied for Medicaid.

They'll usually accept you right away. The medicaid is retroactive and will cover you. In Michigan they give you initial approval immediately when you apply for the pregnant woman/children program but mention something about up to 45 days for the real approval. If a provider accepts medicaid they will probably accept you. Make sure you have the information on the application and tell your new OB. They're usually really good about this.

Don't worry about the new OB's. I saw three different providers for my first pregnancy. The last one I didn't start seeing until the last month. They'll just need your transcripts. They're not going to refuse you just because you're further along. It might actually help you get an earlier appointment than they give to someone that just found out they're pregnant.

When you go in for medicaid tell them you need a notice stating that medicaid is pending. Take this to the doctor. Medicaid covers 90 days back so you can make sure the doctor gets paid. The doctor you are using will be familiar with this policy. Also try and get unemployement. Most states have a website you can go to and set up an account. Its real easy and takes only a few minutes.

Hi, I'm from Indiana so I figured I'd help out. I went on Medicaid when I was pregnant and I was able to get it within a few weeks because of the special circumstance. I would meet with a caseworker and specifically ask what you should do until you get your card because you are so far along. Sometimes the doctor will see you, but a lot of times they will make you pay a fee up front (because they don't trust that you'll get insurance). Definitely call and set up an appointment, or go to the local office and demand that you speak to someone who can answer your questions (they can be impossible sometimes).

That is a really good question and it all depends on the OB. I highly doubt many of them will let you in if your Medicaid is not a "for sure" thing, but you should talk to them about it and have them look into it so they can prove that your insurance is pending....

I think either way, whether or not you have insurance or not, the OB will get their money, but like i said, depends on how they see it...

Good Luck and i am so sorry you lost your job, and at such a terrible time!

Yes ur supposed to wait until u get approved for Medicaid BUT what u can do it apply for EMERGANCY medical assistance and u will get it in a week or 2 and since ur pregnant u will qualify for emergency medical assistance but if u wasn’t pregnant then u would have to wait the 30-45days

    hope this helps

I'm waiting on my medicaid too in Idaho... i'm only 6 weeks tho, but there are free clinics here that do ultra sounds and stuff and i heard that you can do "back pay" on medicaid if your waiting for it atleast here.... i'm sure its pretty much along the same lines... i would but i'm not sure i'll get accepted cause of my fiances wages... i however dont have health insurance because i was just removed from mommy and daddys but we'll see, but here we have a thing called 211 that gives you options and advice on where's good to go or what you can do with the situation your in... maybe at your health and welfare check that option out.... if theres lots of resources here i'm sure theres lots in indiana... i live in stupid IDAHO ha ha. but i have a friend that also applied for medicaid and got accepted that day... mines taking forever.

    oh wow..

    We're in the same boat..

Well, it does take a while for medicaid..BUT you are pregnant, so yours will be approved A LOT faster...I LITERALLY turned in my application on Friday...the next week, like on Thursday I received a letter telling me I was approved, and they gave me my medicaid billing number that I can give to Doctors, until my card arrives..

I live In Las Vegas, NV. But it shouldnt be too much of a difference,as far as the application process.

go to your local clinic like Planned Parent Hood, take a pregnancy test, they will give you a proof of pregnancy paper.you are REQUIRED to have it to apply for medicaid.

Then find the Division of Family Services near your area and go apply. If i were you, make sure you get there by 7am to make sure you are not waiting HOURS>...b/c there are SOoooo many people that be there, and the application is so long(try to print one out online from their site) thats what i did to save time.

and the best way to find the division of family services is to go to maps.google.com tyle in "division family services with your zipcode and it should come up.Call their number to make sure it is the right place.

    Good Luck!

Excellent question. Ask your OB and ask Medicaid. Ask the HR dept of your company as well.

I'm sorry you're getting laid off. That sucks.
