Does replacing the motherboard reset data?
i've been told I need a new motherboard and it's being replaced soon. Will this wipe my hard drive? I don't want to download anything if it's just going to be reset.

Nope, nothing from your hard drive would be erased if its only a motherboard change.

If it's the same exact same motherboard, then no, it will not wipe out any data. If it's a different motherboard, Windows might have a problem booting up because the motherboard is different, in which case you might need to reinstall windows again in order for it to work again. But you might be safe using the option that just re-installs windows and doesn't change your data when you re-install windows. What you DON'T want to do is use the "format" option, this will delete everything. Hope this helps.

Ok.
1. Changing the motherboard will not delete anything from the hard drive. But it will not just change and then just start up again like nothing ever happened.
It will take a little knowledge and depending on what operating system you are currently using what kind of problems you might run into.
Here is a couple of places to check out for help as well.

If you are replacing the motherboard with an identical one, then you do not have to do anything. However if you are getting a differnet type/brand of motherboard then you will need to re-install windows.
re-installing windows will not erase your data providing that you select the option to keep all of your old data in an archive, however i would back it all up anyway, just in case

well a new motherboard may mean the the language between the hard-drive and the CPU may be different, so it may come up with an error saying that the files on the disk are courupt, when actually it just doesnt know how to read them.
although people reguarly replace their hrad-drives for bigger and faster roatating ones. so maybe if you have a software that allows the hard-drive to comunicate with any mother-board, then it shoudl be ok.
but best ask someone in PCWorld or another computer store- they will know.
but WOW, a new mother board, what did you do to this one lol.

It's always best to back-up any data you don't wish to lose! The hard drive doesn't have to be wiped but the chipset drivers for the old mb can create problems with a new boot-up. Good luck! ;-)=

No. It'll bugger up the clock maybe but that's easily fixed. The hard-drive will be fine. Windows might complain and need reinstalling if you're unlucky though

If the motherboard is not the exact duplicate of what you have in it now, you will run into trouble when you try to boot the computer!

No, you'd have to manually do a hard drive sweep to erase it.
