1996 VW Golf Speed Sensor Issue?

I have a 1996 VW Golf that has a speed sensor issue... The speedometer goes off and on when it wants to... causing the check engine light to come on...

I have paid hundreds of dollars in the last 2 weeks to replace the speed sensor, however after 3 new sensors, the problem is still occuring and the check engine light keeps coming back on.

I have to have my car smogged and I cant do it with the check engine light on.

And the code reader still says Speed Sensor when plugged into the car.

The mechanic I have been taking it to, doesnt have a clue anymore, and everywhere I have been calling wants $150 at least just to look at the car itself.

Has anyone else had this problem? I coudl careless if the speedometer works, however I need that check engine light to stay off so I can smog my car...

Help, please.

Thanks!

Unfortunately, I know the cause of your problem, but it's not a cheap fix. Your car's ECM (engine control module AKA your car's computer) is malfunctioning. Once you replace that, your problem will vanish. You could probably go to a junk yard and pull one for a fraction of the cost.

If its like a dream car to you go ahead and get it and dont bother urself reading this, and if not then : That GTI has a VR6 engine! they have very nice power and they are really fast & fun to drive. The VR6 has very nice feauters such as ABS and traction control which can be nice for a frist car, however more toys you get, more breakable parts you get! My first car was a 4cyl Jetta, and I still have it. I am not really sure that I will suggest them for the first car, becuase mine is 99 and I bought it 4 years ago, and also it was a 4 cyl not a VR6 so maintenance is much cheaper than VR6s. VW's are nice cars as long as they have been taken a good care which is a bit expensive. They first time car is always a bit different because you may hit the curb regularly when you park the car, you may forget some maintenance and etc, and the first cars are more likely for teenagers who may not have a good income to spend lots of money on thier cars. Therefor I always suggest a honda or a toyota which are more religable and the spare parts are not that expensive. Even if I suggest a VW i wont say the VR6 because they take premium fuel and they dont have a good mpg, in short they are pricy to run. As I said my first car was a VW, although I did not get into lots of problems, I sometimes think that if it was a Civic or a Toyota, that could be a better car with less problems.
