How to stop my cat from knocking over his water bowl?

My (one year old) cat won't stop tipping over his water dish! He had one that he would put his paw under like he was trying to play with it (he also used to splash his paw in that one), so I got him a little bowl but he knocks that one over too. I end up with water all over my kitchen floor. Right now that only thing I can think to do is only give him a little bit of water at a time so there will only be a little to clean up, but of course I don't want him to not have any to drink. A lot of the time he does it at night so I can't simply scold him. Isn't there anything I can do?

Update:

the bowl had one of those rubber rings around the bottom which lifted it up enough that tape on the bottom wouldn't reach the floor. I bought a bigger, ceramic bowl and I'll see how it goes.

gosh I know how annoying that is. As soon as you fill it up, they knock it over and spill it and after many times you get the feeling they're doing it deliberately to mess with your mind!

Get a heavy square bowl, one that is very hard to knock over. if it is on tiles, you can also use glue-tak under the bowl to stop it moving.

Good luck.. and yes they do get enjoyment out of spilling the water and seeing you frustrated, they have nothing better to do lol

Just wait til it gets older and fussier and sticks its nose in the air at every meal you offer it!

Does your cat always do this no matter how recently you've refilled the bowl? My cat drops things in his bowl (it's far too heavy for him to knock over) when he thinks it needs to be changed. Try changing the water more frequently and see if the behavior changes or stops. Alternately, try using filtered (i started used water from a brita pitcher when I lived in a town where the water had a high chlorine content) water. If none of this changes the behavior, try a self-waterer that holds a greater amount of water or put the bowl in a corner where it cannot be flipped.

    Water Dispenser For Cats

My cat started doing that when I switched to a new bowl. I just gave her less water but checked it often to make sure she wasn't out and then eventually she just stopped doing it. In my opinion with my cat it was just strange to her having a different bowl and so she was playing around with it a bit. So since you have switched bowls it sounds like to try to get rid of this problem maybe your cat is doing the same thing. Get a heavy ceramic bowl and just leave it and don't switch it anymore and see if the cat gets used to it.

Get a heavy granite bowl or a thick heavy glass ashtray. This is what I did I got a clear heavy round ashtray at walmart and cut a round circle in the the black rubbery stuff you put in the cabinets, I guess like contact paper but rubber, the kind with holes in it and its kind of thick. Well, I cut the circle about one and a half inches larger than the bowl and set the ashtray on top of it and it worked! My Tom Tom does not pull at it anymore. My cats problem seems to be an eye problem he knows the water is there but is trying to figure out how far down to put his nose by feeling with his paw. We keep his nails trimmed and this helps too. We also found that putting an ice cube in the water helps too. I also put two folded white paper towels underneath the black circled pad and the clear heavy large ashtray on top of the black pad. This is very easy and my cats love it! Don t forget the ice cube, this helps to draw them to it. Best of Luck!!!

my adult female had this tendency. i figured maybe a self-waterer was the solution for her. she actually managed to get the jug out of the top and dumped THAT all over the floor as well as the dish it sat in. this is going to sound crazy, but our solution was to get a fish bowl (fish included). it was accidental, i didn't even plan it, but it's given her a bowl of water to drink and a toy at the same time. it does sound nuts. but the bowl is way too heavy for her to knock over, she can't actually reach the fish (or flat out refuses to put her feet in that far) and as long as i keep it filled, there's no harm no foul. i got the fish a little cave to hide in, and everyone's happy. if that's too crazy of an idea for you - or sounds too much like fish abuse - 'd say get a heavy crock dog dish and use that. putting it on a rug might help as well as the cat might have a harder time getting his feet under it since he can't slide it around.

First get a cat mat-one of those carpet thingys from the pet for the water and food dishes.

Then try one of the following or combine as appropriate :

1)one of those one gallon water holders and hope the weight is too much for him to flip.

2)velcro or glue the water dish to the cat mat.

3)coat outside of the water dish in Vaseline (leave 1/2 gap from top to keep it out of water). Cats can't stand greasy fur.

4)Hide nearby with a super-soaker squirt gun. A couple of sniper shots should work.

You can always buy the "dual dish" set of dishes that hold both the cat's food and water. Typically these dishes have a rubberized grip on the bottom of them and they are weighted down. If you don't have the money for the dish get some dualsided velcro and attach it to the floor.

had the same problem with my cat.

Get a remnant of linoleum about 2 foot square and glue the bowl to the center.

Your cat will never knock it over again :)
