why is everybody so sure the mets will win the east?

Deeply held faith is considered Truth regardless of facts.

First of all, the East is really tight right now.

Atlanta, who's in fourth, is only 4 games back.

If you look at their last 10 games-

Phillies 2-8

Mets 4-6

Marlins- 7-3

Braves 4-6

I think all four of these teams have a shot- but I'd give the slightest edge to the Mets. The Phillies have been terrible at home. The only thing is- the Mets have to stay close and then make their run in the second half of the season when there back healthy. If the Phillies can get pitching from their bullpen like Madson and Lidge they could hold the Mets off.

I doubt many people think the Mets have that great a chance at taking the East. Their lineup gets more crippled by the day, they can't support their best pitcher, and every person that produces on the team, gets injured. I think Krod is the only producer left now. But injuries aren't an excuse, the fact is that the Mets consistently prove they have no ability to deal with adversity. People that win, overcome misfortune and injuries and fight back to win, day in and day out.

You look at teams like the Dodgers or Red Sox, and late inning come from behind victories are a common occurence. Down three runs in the 8th? No problem. The Mets by contrast, roll over after the 6th inning. I think personally, that they'll continue to sink, and will be in 3rd or 4th place come August. The Braves are strong, and even the Marlins are showing fight.

Oh and for those that think Mets can grab a WC, well they're not paying much attention to the Giants, are they? Giants are surging, and it's going to take a very hot team to beat them out.

Acually there are very few people who are "sure" the Mets will win the east. There are more people who think the Mets should start planning for '10 than people who think they will win the east so i dont know where your coming from with that. The Phillies will still win the east but the Mets will take the Wildcard. When they're plyers are back they are on equal footing with the Phillies and could take a playoff series vs. the Phills. Its just that the Mets top players (Delgado, Beltran, Reyes, etc.) will come back too late for them to make a serious run for the east title. Phillies take the division by 4 games.

I never heard anyone say the Mets are sure to win the east. I'm from ny too and a lot of Mets fans are worried. The Phillies are more likely to win the east....unless the Mets can make a couple good trades and pick up more Starting pitching.
