Take some creamy peanut butter and rub it all around and under the gum. Keep massaging it as far as you can under the gum and slowly lift out as it comes loose. Apply a little more if necessary, but you shouldn't need too much.

We had a Cornish Rex that got gum in the fur on his tail (don't ask.....)

I carefully cut out the gum (it was only stuck a little) off the end of the tail. Fur grew back. Rexes have very little fur and it was not noticable where I cut. So your shorthair will be fine if you cut out the gum. The fur will grow in quickly.

I tried the peanut butter trick - didn't work for me.

Peanut Butter works for humans, I think it would be OK to use for cats. If you use Peanut butter, make sure to give your cat a bath after.

When I was growing up, we were told to use ice. In more modern times, they use peanut butter.

    Give both a try.
