a betta theyre easier to take care of and more colorful

I like both. But if I had to choose one, I'd pick goldfish. They are individually more unique (except for their color, bettas all pretty much look alike), and they get along better with other fish (so I can have many goldfish in together). And they live a lot longer.
While bettas are definitely cleaner, goldfish are not as dirty as people assume. They only poop a lot when they are overfed.

Bettas can live in a 2.5 gallon tank, can live more than 5 years, are very smart and beautiful, and are very easy to care for.
Goldfish require a minimum of 10 gallons of space per fish, a filter rated for double the size of the tank they are in, and very frequent partial water changes. On the plus side, some species grow to more than a foot long, and can live 30 or more years, if properly cared for.
So, it depends on how much space, money, and time you have to devote to tanks and care, and what you personally hope to get from your fish keeping experience.
I choose Bettas every time. They require less space, less intense care, and I personally love them.

I have both
Goldfish in the pond and a betta in my tank
but if I had to pick? my goldfish, they were only 1 inches in size when I bought them, they are now 9 - 10 inches in size and very tame.
Source(s): and for the person above me, if looked after a goldfish can live up to over 30 years, a bettas life span is 5 - 7 years. - 1 decade ago
Probably not the answer your looking for but neither...There are so many other small fish you could get That are way cooler even little frogs that need no more than 1 gallon(if they right type)...but if I had to choice out of the two it would be the BETTA..
