Have you ever really liked a book people told you "you shouldn't"?

So before I can fully ask the question let me get into a story. Recently I've gotten into Brad Thor's books. I read "The Last Patriot" and couldn't put it down. Pre-ordered his newest "The Apostle" that came out today hoping it comes soon. I, myself, don't like to get into politics too much. I like keeping peace and politics only bring bickering. Though, I would consider myself a liberal someone described Thor's books as a "right-wing rant" and "how can I stand reading something that goes against what I believe"? Personally, I never really thought about it as a "right-wing rant" and to me all it was was a thriller with a main character, Scot Harvath, who was extremely likeable. And I like thrillers.

So, my question is this: have you ever enjoyed a book or a series of books that went "against" something you believed in or felt. Something someone told you you probably shouldn't read? You can bend this question in any directions you want....you please don't turn it into a political rant. ;)

Yes. I enjoy Dan Brown. His books are interesting suspense mysteries and well enough written. There is nothing wrong with them is you treat them as such. People however, think I should hate them since I'm catholic. Jeez nothing wrong with the actual book. Yeah it does cause some people to question their faith, but mostly those that are shaky in it evenway.

The other one I enjoyed that went against my faith is The Golden Compass. Okay I read it as anti organized religion and blew the message off as whatever. Then later on I learned what Pullman's real message was. I seriously do not agree with the guy but that doesn't mean that his books are not well written or interesting. I hear some Christian groups go on about how it corrupts the minds of young kids and not to support that demon that wants you to turn away from God. Really (none of the Catholic things out against it went that far but I heard enough don't support Pullman by going to see that movie messages). I say let the kids read it, they will probably see it as a fantasy; leave the bickering and politics to the few adults who want to make an issue out of it.

Sorry for the rants but that's my stance on those two authors I'm told I shouldn't like but do.

I agree with the first poster, save for the swearing. When you read a book, you are basically seeing things from the author's point of view, or from an author's intended point of view. Just because you enjoy reading their stories or experiences does not mean that you should start questioning your own opinions/beliefs. It actually shows that you are more open-minded to others' opinions and ideas, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

For example, if an atheist read a book that described the experiences of a young, struggling christian, unsure of their faith, but eventually getting through their hardships, and the reader enjoyed or agreed with some points throughout the book, it doesn't mean he/she should start turning toward christianity themselves. There may also be the fact that the author writes in such a way that would captivate any audience, no matter the subject.

I don't think there's anything wrong about reading books that contain different ideas which goes against what you may believe in. It's just a book afterall, and it's not telling you to do anything, but rather showing you an alternative, or similar for some readers, point of view.

    Hope this helps.

What about books I should like but don't?

I'm not old, I'm fairly young, so my friends think I like YA books. Which really isn't the case at all. For my birthday last year, a friend bought me a YA book by PC and Kristen Cast. I really didn't like it. I also don't enjoy Meg Cabot or Sarah Dessen, but that's apparently what everyone else is reading.

Also, I really like cole i's answer. As a matter of fact, I just read The Golden Compass a few weeks ago after hearing a lot about it from Lyra. I thought it was great :D

Loki, it's terrific! You'll like it, if not love it. It's a great book. Now I have to get to the next one...

Arabesque, The Golden Compass is now at the top of my reading list. I jumped it just now from under like 20 other titles because miss cole i, you, AND lyra liked it. Should be good!

I have a guilty pleasure of Sarah Dessen's books. I know they're not very well writ and that a lot of people who know me expect me to read thrillers because I have this huge collection, but it's usually the plot idea that gets to me.

Did that make any sense whatsoever?

C'mon LITY, be a buddy, write us a ebook. Not the tech stuff both, we wish filth. Photographic proof too, the extra image the snap shots the larger. I can see all of it now, LITY on Letterman, plagerized through Hustler, youngsters smuggling it into the toilet. Need an agent? It'll make our ebook appear like a technical handbook. Wait a minute, our ebook is a technical handbook.

Yeah, I had some major guilty moments about both Twilight and Harry Potter. But I got over it. They're entertaining stories. People seem to take it way too seriously.

yea, but so what... its only a story and the author did their job and reeled you into the world of the story. No one can or should tell you what you should or should not read. if they do, tell to **** off and actually read it
