LCD or Plasma? Would like LOT'S of answers on this please!!?

I just searched through resolved questions on this topic since I'm sure it has been asked a lot of times. After reading through some answers, I just want some more responses.

With technology I am pretty illiterate if that makes sense. What's the difference between 1080p, i 720 etc? I am looking to get anywhere between a 42" to 46" flat screen. What are the best options for me? Like I said I'm not crazy into technology so I won't notice the little things that other techno nuts might notice. I have digital cable through Time Warner so I have the full HD package automatically which I would like to take full advantage of. I also have a Blu-Ray disc player which is another reason I need a better t.v. So basically, what are the best choices out there for this? Is LCD or Plasma better and why? My budget will be $1500 at the absolute maximum but I would like to spend less than that. I've been looking for t.v.'s at Best Buy but I really don't know what I'm looking at so I don't want to buy until I know what the best option is. Thanks again for taking the time and hopefully I receive a lot of different answers!

Update:

Thanks Sharpguy. Actually for the house I'm moving into I think 50" would be too big. My living room is pretty small. I don't want to go too big and not enjoy it because of the size of my living room. 46" is the absolute maximum I'm going for but it will most likely be a 40" or 42".

Generally the plasma tv has better quality. It shows the darks better and has a better side viewing angle. If you sit to the left or right of an LCD tv, then the picture actually "disappears". A plasma you can sit farther to the left or right of it without the picture disappearing. The pro to LCD is it runs much cooler and uses way less electricity than a plasma. The con to plasma is it suspectible to picture burn in. In other words, if you pause a tv show for 5 mins and come back, you can see a faint image of the frozen picture in the background. It does eventually fade away on its on in about 5-10 mins. But newer plasmas are better than old ones as far a picture burn in. My tv has a feature in the menu screen to turn the picture completely white and after a few mins, it "erases" the picture burn in. It also has a screensaver thing which moves the picture slightly every 10-15 mins which also helps prevent the burn in. My 50" plasma uses a whopping 440 watts of electricity and puts off a lot of heat from the vents in the TV. Generally plasma tv's are 50" and above. Usually when you looking at smaller tv's, they will almost always be LCD.

1080 is ahigher resolution than 720. Unless you are sitting really close to the TV you will not notice the difference. My 50" is only 720

You said your budget is 1500. I got my 50" from Walmart about 3 months ago and it was 828.00 and about 893 after tax. Thats a pretty sweet deal. I originally was going to get about a 42" but when I thought about the investment into this TV, i figured I'd spend an extra 100 bucks and go for the biggest. Thats like walking up to a 42" tv owner and say, what if you could trade in your TV to 50" for only 100.00? I would think most would say Yes.

LCD's are less expensive, final longer, and are larger most commonly In plasmas the lifestyles is shorter, they usually started to downgrade over the years, in addition they use a lot more vigour. The photo might be an identical and if some thing larger on an overly well LCD

TV size matters. The "advanced" features are usually only worth if if you're going to be at 40" or great, but more so if you're going to break 50". So you basically are going to be into the grey area. In the 40's it gets debated a lot. I lean towards going after the better options/features, but I know people that go with simpler options and still enjoy their HD experiences completely.

The features I'm talking about is 1080p (vs 720p), 120Hz/240Hz (vs 60Hz, LCD only), LED (vs CCFL, LCD only), and Plasma (vs LCD). I think if you're going to break 40" then you should go with Plasma 1080p. If you absolutely are hard sold on LCD, then I would say LCD 1080p 120Hz minimum, but consider doing LED LCD 1080p 120Hz.

LCDs are inherently flawed in motion playback. They suffer from motion blur (ghost trails). This is why you have a 120Hz/240Hz sets. This feature helps the issue a lot, but is not 100%. And you pay a price premium for it.

LCDs that use CCFL lights have muted colors, gray blacks, and average contrast. This is compensated for with the new LED backlight LCDs. This helps those issues in a huge way. But it doesn't take them to a Plasma level. And again you're looking at a huge price premium for the feature.

Plasmas are inherently near instantaneous with motion playback. They are flawless there. And Plasmas inherently deliver vivid color, true blacks, and deep contrast. They are inherently a better image right out of the box. No having to pay extra for that better image either.

Plasmas only suffer from myths and misconceptions (dating back to their early models decades ago). LCD fanboys claim that they suffer burn-in, short life spans, and are power hogs. Modern Plasmas no longer suffer burn-in. They have 60,000-100,000 hour life spans (which is equal to, if not greater than, most LCDs). And you can buy Plasmas that are energy star certified, so no power consumption issues either anymore.

As for which Plasma to get, EASY choice. Panasonic Viera S1 series or U1 series. That will give you a tone of bang for your buck. And it will come at a really good price. If you really wanted to max out the quality you could step it up to the G10/G15 lines, but from your description, that seems like it just might be overkill for your needs.

    Panasonic TC-P42U1 is $900

    Panasonic TC-P42S1 is $1,100

    Panasonic TC-P42G10 is $1,300

    Panasonic TC-P46U1 is $1,100

    Panasonic TC-P46S1 is $1,300

    Panasonic TC-P46G10 is $1,500

Again, I think either the U1 or S1 options will serve you great. They are both 1080p sets. The S1 offers some minor upgrades (for playback and in contrast). But I think its not a huge issue in the sizes you're looking at. So if you want to save a bit, and go with the U1, I think you'll still walk away with a set that will blow the neighbours out of the water.

If for whatever reason Panasonic just doesn't work for you, then look towards Samsung or LG. Again look for 1080p sets from them. But that's about the only thing you need to worry about. Plasma + 1080p and you're good to go. The other stuff is marketing, don't get panicked over it.
