What doctor should I see?

I have been having knee pain for awhile now. I get a sharp stabbing pain at the top of the knee cap and the side of the knee cap. The pain occurs during a feeling of joint grinding and locking. I feel it may be a meniscal tear.

Should I see an Internal Medicine doctor?

Orthopedic surgeon?

Does it really matter which one since they both don't know much before they actually see an X-Ray and MRI

Go to a general physician, ask fo x-rays & MRI if possible. Reference to orthopedic specialist.

If you have a structural question (ie, specifically about your knee, like it sounds you do) then you might as well start at an orthopedist. They actually may have enough expertise to give you a good idea of the problem before you get imaging. However, they will likely recommend imaging to be sure.

Orthopedist would be good. I think you should also see a good Chiropractor, since they specialize in joint problems.

I have known Chiropractors to do very well at treating knee and foot problems. After all, all the joints in the body are connected.

Most specialist want a referral from your primary care so start with your family doc and then they will refer you on. That helps with the insurance company too
