Thank you note too general?

We're only now getting around to our thank-you notes (in addition to moving I've also been settling into a new job right after the wedding, and my husband isn't able to help, hence it's been two months). I have one that I'm worried sounds too generic. The problem is that a couple I don't know, and am fairly sure I've never met (I would have been about 3 years old if I did meet them) sent a cheque. Neither of those leads to a proper note. Does anyone have any suggestions beyond the following:

Thank you very much for the cheque that you sent for our wedding. We appreciate that you were thinking of us. We are using the money towards furnishing our apartment.

That sounds fine. They obviously realize that they aren't really that close to you, so they won't be expecting anything more than a nice thank-you, and a little explanation of how you plan to use it, which you've included. Maybe for one last sentence you can put, "Thanks again for your generous gift, and we hope to see you next time you're in town."

That sounds good but what I did is make a list of the money and gifts we got and from whom. When we bought things with the money, I wrote what we bought. When it came to doing the notes, I put something along the lines of "Dear Auntie Jane, thank you so much for your gift. It wasn't necessary but with it we were able to purchase a new cook ware set. Maybe now I can finally teach John how to cook which is a feat in and of itself. Thank you again! Love Jill and John" Our families have a great sense of humor so we wanted to incorporate that into the notes.

Don't mention the cheque. Just say "Thank you for your generous gift. We are planning to use it towards furnishing our new apartment! Thank you so much for sharing this day with us!"

What you wrote is fine. You don't have to write a book, it's a thank you card.

It sounds a little dry, so put in "it was so sweet of you to do this for us".

    Because, it was.
