I do not think that confronting T. Boone Pickens was such a bad move for the freshman senator from Minnesota - Al Franken. There are times, as the former vice president has shown us, that people cannot simply hide their emotions. Mr. Cheney told Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) to go f--- himself. I do not know, however, the details of Mr. Franken's exchange with Mr. Pickens. What I do know, is that Mr. Pickens is not immune from criticism over Pickens' funding of the Swift Boat ads and now seeking to curry favor with the Democrats over clean energy. I cannot read Mr. Franken's mind but I am sure that there are other Democrats who wish that they could have called out the 'Swift Boaters' over their attacks on Senator John Kerry (D-MA).

That said, no matter what Mr. Franken does, he is still an amateur when compared to the real professionals at making fools of themselves in the Senate:

1. Getting involved in a prostitution ring; having diaper fetish

2. Having an affair with the wife of a staff member; asking parents to pay $96,000 in hush money

3. Putting his hand on the inner thigh of a male newspaper columnist during a dinner party - and keeping it there the entire length of the dinner

4. Setting up her primary website in her campaign for governor to let search engines direct people to her site by entering phrases that imply the governor of her state (and her primary opponent whom she is challenging) is gay.

5. Of course, the incident where a former senator referred to an opponent's campaign worker as a 'macaca.'

But, in spite of the circus we have in Washington, we would like to believe that Mr. Franken invented the pretzel logic that rules in the capital.
