What is wrong with these vets? They have NO heart...?

I have delt with 5 vets in the same office.

2 think my kitty can beat this illness, 3 are MORBID and negative and mean, well probably because the keep insisting I am loosing my kitty.

First she was diagnosed with FeLV, then FIP... NOW... she doesn't have either.

However, she does have breathing issues. It is more shallow and fast BUT it has been progressively getting better over the past 4 days. She can only go so far before she rests for a bit and then continues on. However, as of now I am seringe feeding her food and water. She hasn't really been using the restroom and all of this originiated with an ear infection. :0(

Her blood count was 37000 and I guess it should be around 15000. She has had a fever between 103.4 and 104.7 for about 5 days. She has discharge from her nose, clear but it drips when she breathes sometimes. Her third eyelid pretty much won't retract unless I call her name or if something startles her.

They did take an xray. From the side they noticed they couldnt really see the bottom of the lining of her heart well but looking down through the spine there was no trace of anything. One vet said it could be lymphoma, FIP, heart disease or just a collection of her skin. (she is a 20 pounder) ;0)

Anyone ever go through this? Can a cat pull through a bad respiratory infection? Has your vets ever been way off? Have you pulled through when death was the prognosis?

I just don't feel right about the direction they are going in. I am taking her to a holistic vet soon but just need some sort of direction, positivity...

Update:

I apologize for the nastiness about the vets. It's acutually one that deserves that. The other two are just about protocol.. I can't talk badly about that. But anyway... her first test was positive with FeLV but the second was negative. They confirmed it and told me that she had probably come into contact once with it, fought it and now has the antigens.

As far as the rest goes.. well, yeah.. Im just going to take her elsewhere.

Thanks guys. ;0)

Vets don´t look at your pet, they look at your wallet.

Did they do a full blood panel?

Did they take a sample of the mucus and check it?

Did they do two x-rays (a cat that large has too much fat around the organs to see everything in one shot)

FIP is extremely hard to diagnose in a cat who is just starting to present symptoms, however FeLV is able to be a definite yes or no with the in house blood test that gives a result in 15 minutes. Was the Elisa test given? That is accurate for FeLV and should have been the first thing done.

Your cat has vague symptoms that fit a number of different things. It could be any of them, you have to ask questions about how to rule each one out, and work with the vet.

Get that full blood panel to find out what the internal organs are doing. Get a solid answer on what the cat's Bun level is. Have the results of the Elisa test put down on paper.

Shallow breathing can be a heart problem (I lost one of my cats to this), if the left ventricle thickens up too much to pump blood then fluid fills the chest cavity and compresses the lungs, making the cat gasp for air. If it's the right ventricle thickens up too much to pump blood then the abdomen fills with fluid, compressing the digestive system and stomach.

All this can be compounded by having an upper respiratory going on at the same time, throwing off some of the levels.

I am in no way qualified to assess your cat's condition and I do not mean to give you false hope. However vets, like human doctors, are not created equal.

I think you need to find a new vet, a better vet, one who will work with you and that you need to find that vet fast. Start researching tonight. Begin phone calls in the morning.

I think a holistic vet could be a good option as could taking your cat to a veterinary teaching hospital.

In the meantime, get as many calories into the cat as possible. Liquids too.

Did they say what the infection was? Is she on antibiotics for it?

If you already have a holistic vet lined up I would call and ask for an emergency appt. and have your cat's records faxed over beforehand.

    Good luck.

    Try another vet.

My 3 year old female dane got really sick awhile back. She was lethargic, her stomach was hard, she was scared of the stairs, wouldn't eat and would go a day and a half without going to the bathroom.

We went to the vet (scared of possible bloat because of her stomach). They ran tests, kept her overnight. She had a high fever that would lower with medications but eventually spike way back up. They took x-rays and said nothing was wrong. His exact words were "Sometimes, stuff like this happens and we just never know." He said she might just need to be put down.

After $1000 of no results, we went to another vet. They took x-rays, looked at them for 5 minutes, and figured it out. She had a spinal infection. Ate up 5 discs and deformed most of the vertebrae. It was even on the x-rays the other vet took.

Now, she's happy as ever, though her back is still tender.

It can be worth seeing another vet.

I think I'd find a different vet office - no reason for the nastiness. Take a copy of the vet records. Yes, vets can be wrong like anyone else. But stay with one vet, and continue to work with that person. Cats can pull through many things. A bad illnes does not mean that it is a death sentence. It can also mean an illness that you and your cat adjust for and live with.

Im no vet so i dont know the science of it.

But sometimes vets can underestimate an animal and they can pull through, but dont get your hopes up too much.

My rabbit had to be put down because of a respiratory infection, it got to the point were he was struggling to breathe so we made the choice to stop him suffering a slow death and sadly this could happen to your cat.

Take your cat to another vet, tell them all of what has happened and ask for there opinion. Maybe this just isnt a good vet, if they misdiagnosed her twice they dont seem to be too sure of what there doing.

Oh, I'm so sorry. My dog had pulled through an extra year even though my vet said he would die because of age...if you have the wrong vibe from those vets...you can't be sure. I hope you do go to that other vet, and tell them straight out that the other vets did not answer your questions...and you want to know exactly what is wrong and what you can do. Demand it. It's your kitty. I hope that you and your cat recovers and i'll pray for it. :)

Also...that does not sound god at all..it's an EMERGENCY when a cat cannot go to the bathroom or eat and has discharge dripping from her mouth. Plus that fact that she does not respond. Get her to that other vet. I mean..ASAP!!

    Source(s): A petowner..and hopefully a future veterinarian.

Vets no what there on about. They wouldn't have passed to become a vet if they were rubbish.

If u are really unhappy with what they are saying, then please change vets.

Take it to another vet and get there opinion.

Poor kitty does sound bad! Hope it gets better very soon...

My cat had some symptoms like this, however we did not have the money to invest into expensive surgeries/medical tests. We had him put to sleep. I did not want to make him suffer or live a poor quality of life.
