What is a good gift for an engagement party?
The groom & bride are in their twenties and have never been married. I do not want to give them money. The engagement party will be at the groom's parents home.

Engagement parties are not gift-giving occasions. Most people are not comfortable going to a party empty-handed, so bringing a card and a bottle of wine is perfectly fine. No more.
Do NOT get frames, candles, etc. The last thing this couple wants is 30 photo frames that don't match their decor. Super cheesy.

Presents are actually optional at an engagement party, and when people do bring gifts, it is usually just a small token, like a gift card to a restaurant or a nice picture frame for their engagement photo. Lots of people like to give gifts that relate to the planning of the actual wedding as engagement gifts. For instance, when I first got engaged, I didn't have a party, but a few people gave me things like wedding planning and etiquette books, a big wedding-planning binder with divider tabs, a bridal journal, etc. Maybe for this couple, you can give them a book that really helped me out- "The Wedding Book," by Mindy Weiss and Lisbeth Levine. It is basically a complete how-to of all things wedding-related, from how to tell people you're engaged to how to preserve your bouquet after the wedding. In addition to all the etiquette rules and helpful pictures and charts, it also comes with fun little facts and trivia about how traditions came to be. All in all, it was the best wedding book I read, and believe me, I read a few!

Keep it simple and inexpensive, not all engagement party's are followed by weddings.
My suggestion: A Journal, to write down each moment leading up to the wedding. Purchase a scrapbook Wedding Couple cut-out to
adhesive to the cover of the journal. Write a note on the inside cover.

I don't think it is necessary to give a gift at an engagement party. But, if you did want to give them something, I'd keep it minimal- you don't need to spend a lot on the gift.
How about something sentimental like this wedding keepsake journal:

They'd have plenty of time to record special memories about their relationship and their day.
Go with something sweet and sentimental, instead of a flashy gift. You can do that later at the wedding :)

A lot of couples have already registered somewhere by their engagement party so that's one option. Most people bring gift cards. I usually take a small vase or something.

Ask them, I know it sounds silly but if they are using a particular Florist or Dress shop etc you can get them a Gift Certificate for there so they can use it towards wedding expenses. Or you can make a photo album for them using pictures of when they met etc.. Or you can get something for a house (Clock, Vase, Picture Frames etc...)

IF YOU ARE FRIENDS I WOULD GET THEM A MEMORY BOX, SOMETHING TO KEEP LITTLE THINGS IN, PICTURES, THEATRE STUBS, CONCERT TICKETS, ETC... TO BE USED LATER AFTER MARRIAGE IN A SCRAPBOOK., PUT A CUTE SMALL, EVEN HANDMADE CARD THAT SAYS THIS. SOME GOOD PLACES TO LOOK ARE ROSS, MARSHALLS, TJ-MAXX, BEALLS OUTLET, TUESDAY MORNING, MICHAELS, HOBBY LOBBY, JOANNS. LOTS OF COLORS, DESIGNS,SHAPES AND SIZES TO CHOOSE FROM.
IF YOU GET A BIG ENOUGH ONE, YOU COULD SLIP IN A BOTTLE OF WINE, OR A PENDANT / CHARM WITH THE ENGAGEMENT DATE ON IT.

It's a good idea to get them something that's on one of their registries.
Do you know if they are registered any where?
