Does organized religion offer psychological comfort / strength to individuals in the form of "community"?

If humans have a psychological makeup which *benefits* from participating in a group-activity where they are more or less supported in thinking, aspiring, meditation on matters which ... for lack of a better term, are "spiritual" / "religious" ... even if the underlying premise(s) might be fabricated from late-night campfire stories, speculations, pipe-dreams, etc ..

(big "IF") .. the question arises, what can modern people do to substitute for this "community" of belief / support?

I've read that many people on this forum tend to think that religion tends to rise up from (possibly false) beginnings into something which can give strength.

Is there a "non-believer" community which can offer the same?

and, if so, why not?

Update:

"omenosis" ?? I am usually skeptical when I hear the term "genetically inferior" ... .... I'm pretty much an agnostic, but also don't feel comfortable dissing generalized undefined 'others'

(at least, not tonight)

Update 2:

Mit C Hell ... yup "opiate of the masses" just might have a lot of truth to it

"The First Noble Truth is that life is suffering. To live, you must suffer. It is impossible to live without experiencing some kind of suffering. "

paraphrased Buddha

Update 3:

Citizne Fernando .. hmm, you might be right . but a small flag goes up when I see the conditional "ought to be"

"been there, done that" and I'm not really sure

Update 4:

the kittenator ... me too, I'd really, really love to see a "better religion"... yup, I really would

Update 5:

hermes ,,, fear is a real-deal sort of emotion, and just "denial" don't make the suffering go away... I wish I had a good answer, mebbe that's why I'm asking

Update 6:

David, I'm glad you agree at least in part ... (couldn't get your web-site to open)

Update 7:

Alberich, you may have hit on something... the "feeling of need" .. which may or may not exist in many.

tho I still feel that there is a form of 'suffering' that these non-needy (sic) may feel in the absence of 'community'

ps: I'm more or less one of those

^" utopian dreamer" LOLOL oh well

My perception is that mature individuals who consider themselves spiritual, but not religious, have no basic fundamental need for a feeling of "community" such as you describe.

But most, no matter what their beliefs, have a need to share some things in their life about which they are interested and care about.

For many I would speculate, that's exactly the function that participating on this program serves: "sharing".

Yes, Religion is HERD or TRIBE mentality. Groups huddled in caves afraid to face the world alone. Generally it is caused by Paranoia (The fear of God ) and (the worry of Social Damnation). It's also like a FEAR CONTRACT that they all sign so that nobody can leave until they all do. (Don't abandon me).

It must actually work to make them feel safe... because both the Book and the Dogma are rather empty. It was openly demonstrated after 911 that FEAR could be used as a UNIFYING PRINCIPLE... and still they are afraid.

    The sky is not falling.

They give comfort. But comfort given by reasoning ought to be much better than the comfort given by clinging to hallucinations
