math is cool consciousness is cool "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times; it ws the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness; it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity; it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness; it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair; we had everything before us, we had nothing before us; we were all going directly to Heaven, we were all going the other way." • Prove: In an equilateral tetrahedron, all faces are equilateral triangles.?

rigorously (in a way that any teacher or prof would "accept" as correct.) ... that "In an equilateral tetrahedron, all faces are equilateral triangles."

sub-ques: prove that a tetrahedron HAS TO HAVE triangular-faces?

I mean, it's OBVIOUSLY true, but how would you *prove it*?

    or ...

partly meaning that "everybody knows" statements are "hand-waving" compensation for clear understanding.

I'm not taking any class and have no homework, yada yada ... 20+ years since taking math class, but was wondering how-to construct an argument

  • any online recordings of Buddhist chanting?

In particular, Buddhist monks chanting the "namo-tassa phakavato alihato ,, somar som puddahsa" (that's the way it sounds to MY ears anyway ... and it goes on from there) I've tried youtube, but no luck ... [Theraveda or Mahayana ok ...] I'm not interested in "beautiful music" along these lines .. just a group of monks doing chanting of the ancient words at this point I think the term "namaste" applies

  • How much growling ok between 8yo(50lb) and 5mo(BIG puppy)?

The 8 yo (F-spayed) is the first dog I've ever had, so I really don't *know* about dogs. Had her since age 1 or 2.

A 5 month old (F) puppy who stands 6" taller than the 8yo.

Both dogs have good diposition. (8yo [Lab-Pit] is kinda shy around children ... 5mo [Belgian Ger-Sheperd] is goofy friendly LONG-TALL puppy ... young dog moved in 30, 40 days ago ... growing still, handfuls of loose skin]

The older dog growls, sometimes, at the younger but very rarely BARKS.

Never had 1 dog and never lived in a 2-dog home either. It's all new to me. I could google the question, but maybe if anyone has any advice, observations, "Dogs for Dummmies" knowledge, I'd be very grateful. or links to websites which explain dog-psychology in 2-dog interactions ...

*Some* growling is probly ok, but is there anything I should look out for?

    pupppy is

  • why does the AC compressor keep running after I turn OFF the defroster?

probably my lack of precision but I should have asked "why does the compressor keep running after I turn OFF the defrost-setting" ... I can accept that defrost engages compressor, removes humidity, lubricates pressure-seal, etc but compressor continues even after switching the vent / AC settings to "normal". I asked this question earlier but didn't seem to convey my meaning very clearly. Thank you earlier answerers :) ... but I'm wondering if maybe something is wrong with 2006 Nissan Sentra ... excellent car otherwise

  • Why does the air-conditioner compressor stay on after you turn on defroster?

seems like if you defrost / de-fog windshield, the AC turns on and lowers gas-mileage... is this something wrong with my car (Nissan Sentra) or is this common effect in most cars?

  • How can you regain "speaker working" ..(w/ "Party Poker" logged in' not playing) can't get youtube audio?

WINXP and I *know* that closing Party POker would make the speakers work ... but for the sake of peace under one roof, that's not an option. This is a tough computer knowledge question, but maybe it would be cheapest just to get another computer ... it would be *easiest* ,,,, but if anyone knows how to do it, I'd be very grateful

  • Why do many shows have audio level [volume] of music/background sound LOUDER than the spoken word?

Why do many (esp documentaries) have audio level [volume] of music/background sound LOUDER than the spoken narrative?

I saw a Steven Hawking piece on the Discovery channel recently and during explanation of fairly subtle points, the background music drowned out the spoken words. ??? what purpose is being served by pumping up some mediocre music over the words that are explaining things?

Do audio-engineers not realize that many people want to HEAR what other people say?

  • Does organized religion offer psychological comfort / strength to individuals in the form of "community"?

If humans have a psychological makeup which *benefits* from participating in a group-activity where they are more or less supported in thinking, aspiring, meditation on matters which ... for lack of a better term, are "spiritual" / "religious" ... even if the underlying premise(s) might be fabricated from late-night campfire stories, speculations, pipe-dreams, etc ..

(big "IF") .. the question arises, what can modern people do to substitute for this "community" of belief / support?

I've read that many people on this forum tend to think that religion tends to rise up from (possibly false) beginnings into something which can give strength.

Is there a "non-believer" community which can offer the same?

    and, if so, why not?

  • Is Saturn's moon, Hyperion, a "captured comet-core" ?

    here's a picture:

    http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html

it *looks* like a captured snowball, which some people think a comet more or less is, composition-wise .... and the thin, dark layer could be just the deposit over millenia, of solar wind.

just a wild guess, but this picture sure looks like it supports the guess.(thinking back to the time when spacecraft approached the comet several years ago .. low density, chaotic rotation, etc ....

    thoughts?

  • How can you know the mecury levels in fish-oil supplements?

I've heard about warning on mercury levels in fish leading to limiting fish-consumption for pregnant women, but where can a person find out about what levels of mercury are present in fish-oil supplement capsules? (in the USA at any rate)

  • What's the association between (am) talk-radio and Christianity?

I just got new job a week ago and share a work-area with another guy who listens to Sean Hannity talk-radio (AM) ...

(and others like that ..luckily no Rush Limb)

there seems to be a "link" between hard-core Republican political thinking and and conserrvative Christianity.

The "word-picture" flavor is sometimes agonizing hard-heaerted spirit of "meanness" // ("the lib'ruls .... [insert favorite *bad* verb here]..." )

    good grief!

it's like listening to delusional thinkning for hours at a time

delusional thinkning with malice toward disagreement points of view.

How can I keep this stuff from getting under my skin?

I was laid off from a 6-year job 2 weeks ago and feel lucky

to find employment fairly fast, but in this economy, I don't

think that it would be a good move to quit this job.

I have over 40 years of work history and get aloing with

coworkers ... but I feel a strain here.

    suggestion???

  • What are some of your favorite quotes?

I ran across one in the last couple days and I really like the way it "speaks"

"If we value the pursuit of knowledge, we must be free to follow wherever that search may lead us. The free mind is not a barking dog, to be tethered on a ten-foot chain. "

    -Adlai E. Stevenson Jr.

(( he was mid-20th century diplomat and politician ))

please post one or two that you enjoy for whatever reason.

  • Does McCain believe in "hands off the children" in the realm of partisan politics?

In a GOP fundraiser in 1998 McCain appears to have said bad things about 18 year old Chelsea Clinton:

when Chelsea was barely 18 years old. That's right, war hero John McCain picking on a little girl.

"Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno."

    http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/02/19/m...

The fact that McCain had made the tasteless joke was reported in major newspapers, as was the vain attempt by his press secretary to initially deny what McCain had done. But in several major newspapers, the joke itself was kept a secret.

looking into mirror and seeing exrtemely dilated (left) eye ... later changed into multiple pupil / iris's which had differing shapes, but all of the same color, pale yellow / green (not my eye color)

saw black-handled scissors, which I had given someone, and was tempted to take them, but resisted the temptation
