Ok got a multiple cat house problem....PLEASE! can somebody help me?
Ok so Ill try to make this short as possible. Have 2 kitties, Fat Kitty (Misty) & Skinny Kitty (Gromit)...thought Fatty was sick took her to vet, found out "No" shes just too fat to clean herself properly, hence irritated anal glands. Ok, switch kitties to a wet food only diet per the vet. Problem 1: Skinny WONT eat the wet food, wants dry food. Fatty on the other hand eats it ALL, Skinnys too if you dont watch her. Moved dry food to basement where Fatty doesnt go but Skinny hangs out A LOT. Left bowl of dry food out so Skinny can eat at leisure as this is his prefered habit.(Fattys eats all at once, Skinny grazes thru day) Well Fatty caught on & now we are in a dilema as to how to provide Skinny w the food he needs & at the pace he's like to eat it (if possible) and NOT let Fatty get fatter & turn into a living orb of furr (with a dirty bum I might add =P ) Misty(Fatty) is fed twice a day & I was hoping to be able to leave Gri]omits food out for him to eat but since that wont work is there ANY one whos delt w this type of thing & could offer ANY advice? Thanks♥
ok cpl added details...1st THANK YOU! For your help. Ok, yes Misty can jump but we do think she may not be able to scale the child gate we have stretched across the doorway in btwn the rooms in the basement.(We already have the gate up as our pug likes to sneak down there & raid the litter box that is stationed down there >=p, ewww...lol)
MIsty is a Silver Tabby British Shorthair & Gromit is a DSH/Chartreux...♥♥
I guess we will try the timed eating method. We'll feed Gromit in the basement & Misty upstairs(as since shes found the food down there she is suddenly interested in the basement lol) & only leave Gromits food out for a certain amount of time.
FAtty can jump, she jumps up on the bed, couch & my lap BUT we're not sure she can scale the petgate....tho Im about positive that herknowing food is on the other side she WILL find her way over it somehow.

Kathleen has the right idea, and another thing you can do is put up an expandable gate in the doorway that goes to the basement. Gromit can get through the holes, or jump over, but Misty may be too fat to do so.
If that doesn't work for you, put in a SMALL ( Chihuahua size ) cat door in the basement door. This should be too small for Misty to get through, until she loses enough weight.
This particular problem seems to happen a lot, in multi-cat households. Some cats ( Persians in particular ) are prone to obesity, where the more slender cats ( Siamese, etc ) can eat the same and stay thin. It may be whatever breed "mix" your cats are, that are determining the way they react to food.
Frustrating, I know..........but, I hope this helps. Good luck with your "dilemma".....

Other than separating them temporarily until Fatty gets slimmer and can clean himself, the only option I think you really have is to work to convert Skinny from a free-feeder to a twice-a-day fed cat. I know it will be rough for a week or two, but I can't think of another idea that would work.
To do it, don't just do it - transition Skinny into it. How? First, continue to feed them in different locations - this is a good thing, given how Fatty hoards food. Second, start putting Skinny's food away for a small amount of time each day. Then lengthen the time the food is put away. Then when it is up to a few hours, start also putting it away at night when you go to bed. If you do it gradually, Skinny will get used to it and will switch to a twice-a-day fed cat - the key is gradually - doing it suddenly will not work and you will have a very hungry and upset kitty.

I would be providing the dry food to Gromit for only a limited amount of time each day- say 20 mins twice a day. Put her in a seperate room- like the basement- and close the door.
Once her 20 mins are up, take the remaining food and put it back in the box, ready for her next feed.
She will learn that she has a time frame on the food, and it will stop Misty from getting the food when she leaves it.
Good luck!

the best thing to do would be at feeding time to separate the cats. Put them in two different rooms and shut the door during feeding time so misty eats whats she is supposed to eat for her weight problems and the Gromit eats the dry food and maybe give a little more dry food.
I think for a few days to a week keep them separated in two different parts of the house because that will give Gromit his chance to gain some weight on him. that's probably whats going to help them. until their weight changes.

Is Fatty too fat to jump up? Put Skinny's food up in the basement on a table or counter, or on top of a deep freeze.

yeesh thats a problem I was gonna say if skinny ate all at once and fatty grazed through the day you could just put skinny in a room fed her her food then let fatty eat her wet food thru the day, sorry :(

Put Skinny's food inside a cardboard box that's been placed upside down, with a hole cut in the side that Fatty can't fit through. Weight down the box with something they can't knock off.
