The best way to sanitize after a cat has visited?

Okay, so stray kitty that showed up at my house has been taken home by his original owner! YAY!!!!

My Question: Without using bleach, unless there is no other way, how to sanitize the room he was kept in so my own 4 kitties can go back in. I'm willing to use bleach, but I'm hoping someone has a safer, kitty friendly way to clean the room. Thank you!

Detergent, any old kind, kills most bacteria. Bleach kills many viruses and bacteria. Flea eggs and parasite oocysts, I don't know.

I would clean with a 10% bleach solution with detergent added after vacuuming every nook and cranny thoroughly. Rinse well.

Bleach and ammonia are 2 very different chemicals. There is no ammonia (NH3 ) in bleach ( sodium hypoclorite, NaClO ). Do not ever combine the two because the reaction releases chlorine gas (Cl2). This is very highly toxic.

This is why it is a good idea for anyone cleaning a litter box with bleach to rinse, rinse, rinse. Hypothetically, at least, the ammonia in the cat's urine could react with the bleach residue and release toxic chlorine gas.

Another alternative is to use Lysol spray on every surface. It is even more toxic than the bleach though and you can't really rinse it off well.

If you are concerned about even the bleach, keep the cats out of the room for a couple days after sanitizing.

Don't use bleach - it has ammonia in it, which smells like URINE to cats.
