Why is Health Care Reform a bad idea?

I am a Canadian and I think that universal health care is the best thing ever. I love that when my son required speech therapy, he was assigned a speech therapist for semi-monthly visits, when my father needed by-pass surgery, he got his by-pass surgery (and he didn’t have to sell his house to pay for it). I love that I can have children without fear that I will have to give birth at home because I can’t afford to have them in a hospital.

I don’t understand why so many are against healthcare reform. I’m sorry if I sound ignorant, but this is just what I understand from being north of the border:

1. Americans like paying for individual health insurance?

2. Individual health plans are still preferred, even when certain claims are refused by the provider and an insured is forced to go out of pocket

3. Americans are opposed to wait times. They would prefer that many (mostly lower class) never saw a doctor so that they could see one on short order if they need one.

4. Paying insurance premiums to a private, for-profit company is preferred over paying insurance premiums as higher taxes to the government

5. Americans want to pay for their own health care and do not want their own income taxes/insurance premiums to go towards the health care of someone less fortunate

I know my statements sound slanted, but I truly don’t see what is so bad about the plan. I’m not saying that Canada’s health care is the model of perfection, but at least no person is forgotten, or left to die because of their social status.

I tried reading other’s questions and answers, but mostly it’s snarky back an forth so please, I’m not trying to start a debate, I’m looking for a rational response as to how health care reform will be bad for individuals.

"1. Americans like paying for individual health insurance?"

Yes, I like freedom to choose what healthcare I want. Just like I choose which car insurance, home insurance, etc. that I want to buy - the government doesn't dictate it to me!

"2. Individual health plans are still preferred, even when certain claims are refused by the provider and an insured is forced to go out of pocket"

I understand the risks of insurance coverage and I have bought appropriate coverage. I don't expect other people to pay for my medical expenses.

"3. Americans are opposed to wait times. They would prefer that many (mostly lower class) never saw a doctor so that they could see one on short order if they need one."

Funny. I am opposed to waiting for my fast food, but I don't ask that poor people never go to McDonalds so that I can get food fast. Somehow the free market has worked this out without government intervention!

"4. Paying insurance premiums to a private, for-profit company is preferred over paying insurance premiums as higher taxes to the government"

The government bureaucracy destroys everything it touches. Funny isn't it that I can go to Fex Ex at 11pm on a Sunday and mail a package, but not the post office? And forget it if I want to go to the DMV!

"5. Americans want to pay for their own health care and do not want their own income taxes/insurance premiums to go towards the health care of someone less fortunate"

I don't want the government sticking their fingers in the PIE and creating a huge network of needless bureaucracy! That is all waste! At the most I would support government vouchers for buying private care with very little regulation!

Reform is good. However, not Obama Care. That plan will certainly pull the plug on grandma and maybe even you if you are in an accident. The government will deny healthcare to millions and millions yet we will all have to pay much higher taxes for Obama Care. Don't believe a word of "the people earning over $250,000 will pay for everyone." Also, 45% of the doctors say they will retire. Reform would be being able to buy health insurance across state lines, for those people that have expensive diseases, they should be allowed to buy some kind of government plan, tort reform will help too.

The concept of health care reform isn't a bad idea. So far, what has been proposed isn't going to bring about positive reform, it's just going to add to the problem and introduce even more government involvement in health care. They keep telling us that insurance companies are the problem, then they want to add another insurance company, run by the government, to the mix. That doesn't sound much like reform to me.

There will be too much government control. We will still be paying for health insurance. This plan will raise taxes on everyone. If every person is required to have health insurance we won't have enough doctors and nurses to care for the present 32 million uninsured. Right now if you are at the poverty level in the US we have Medicaid which is even better than most people who are paying for health insurance. If you are sick and go to the emergency room by US law they can not refuse you care because you have no insurance.

    It's not.

There's NO question that some kind of healthcare reform needs to happen.

Debate exactly how it should come about all you want, but don't try to pretend this is the best it can ever be (unless, of course, you work for the health insurance industry. Because then we know that profits are more important than honesty.)

    1. Yes, it allows us to choose what we are covered from and it means we don't have to pay money for some lazy guy on welfare to get his yearly check-up.

    2. You choose what is covered, if you want to protect yourself from more things, you pay more money.

    3. Only about 15% of Americans are uninsured, and most of them are people that don't want (but can afford to) to spend money on insurance.

    4. The companies have something to lose if they don't do a good job (customers stop buying insurance from their company, or people stop buying their stock). The government has nothing to lose if they do a poor job.

    5. If they don't want to pay for their own health care why should I? I pay 10% of my income to charity, I am generous enough.

Its not. People in this country are easily manipulated by right wing spin and are willing to believe any lie on the internet.

Single payer system is the best system. I have never heard a single Canadian complain about "long lines for treatment". The only people saying that are the right wing minions on the fox noise channel.

As an American, I like that:

    1. I don't have to enter a lottery to get a family doctor.

    2. I don't have to wait a month to get access to ( what Americans consider ) basic medical care.

    3. I like that I can choose who I pay or if I even pay at all.

    4. I like that there isn't a government panel making a decision if I'm valuable enough to keep alive.

A system like Canada's would be of no benefit to Americans. It would increase costs, lower quality and eliminate choice. There's no upside to it, why would we want it?

It won't and you'd think americans would run to it....after all every disease that you can think of is here.....and a lot of them span from excess....like too much eating....too much sun.....too much botox....too much pill popping.....too much drinkin.....the list goes on....

Hell maybe the president should repackage the plan as Social Security To Keep You Alive When You Get Old After Years Of Excess LOL

Americans like to gamble thats why they so rich....they also get shafted bad when things go bad

Most everyone want's reform, just not a national program that is imposed on us at such a high cost, there's no money left for anything else and that is what is being proposed.

I don't begrudge Canada its plan because it seems to work for them but, you have to keep in mind that there are less people in Canada than there are in California alone. Your plan may work for you but, it won't work here.

0'bama wants the US to be like Canada in many respects. Why?

Canada is dripping with natural resources is strategically located and is the second largest nation in the world but, most people around the globe forget its even there becuase they have imposed a marginal existence on themselves. I don't want the US to be like Canada anymore than I want Canada to be like the US.

You keep yours, we'll keep ours.
