Do some research on heartworms in cats, and make sure that your vet is up to date. Did they do xrays to see the extent of the heart/lung inflammation? And do you now have her on a heatworm preventative like Revolution to avoid additional mosquitoe bites? Cats cannot be treated for heartwom the same way a dog would, as in cats the worms generally migrate to the lungs, and then can cause damage to the heart, the arteries and veins, and the lungs. Often a steroid is prescribed to reduce the inflammation. It's really a case of monitoring the cat, treating the inflammation (if present), and hoping for the best. One of my cats (indoors only) was bitten by a heartworm positive mosquito, and tested positive on the antigen test, then negative on the anitibody test. All radiographs were normal, thank goodness, but now everyone gets Revolution applied monthly. My vet also is very well-versed in heartworm in cats - not all of them are, as it's just now being recognized as a fairly common problem in cats, even indoor cats.

For your cat, the worms will eventually die. If minimal damage is done, there is no reason she can't live a normal life. Heart issues of course need to be monitored carefully, but there are medications that can be used in cats with heart issues. Again, make sure she gets Revolution monthly to make sure she doesn't get bitten again, and be sure that she gets regular vet exams to keep an eye on her heart.

    Good luck!

wow thats bad. your cat needs medicine or else open heart surgery. The worms would grow and multiply and rip the heart open.
