My cat was wormed a week ago. Should he be shedding live segments still?

He's 4 months old and I got him from an animal shelter. The vet used Imovec one week ago and if it is normal that he be shedding live tapeworm segments, how long will it go on? Poor little thing. How many tapeworms do they have, for goodness sake?

Update:

Evidently spelling it Imovec stopped me from getting any good search results! It is not effective against tapeworm so I have just stuffed a buttered praziquantel down his throat. He was only in the shelter for five days before I took him a week ago so I guess he had the worms before he got there. Other than that he's doing fine and at least the flea treatment he was given seems to be working. I'll frontline him in a month. Anyone know how long it takes for the praziquantel to work?

It's not uncommon for kittens to need more than one worming, and sometimes they can really come loaded with worms. While I'm not a vet, I'm not certain that Ivermectin is really effective against tapeworms. Did the vet do a fecal exam to see what kinds of worms he had, and has he been treated for fleas? Also, you need to disinfect his litter box, or he could just reinfest himself by ingesting the segments. Dump the litter, bleach the box, and refill with fresh litter. And get him back to the vet for another worming. Generally they do it 2 weeks apart but it can be done again without harm.

Cats have to be wormed twice 2 weeks apart. Any eggs left in the intestines will be killed with the second worming. It sounds to me like you have waited to long between wormings and will have to start the process all over again. Make sure you are very dilligent about cleaning the litter pan, if the cat get the eggs on his paws he can clean his paws and become reinfected.

shame yes, the poor little thing... i would think that the meds the vet gave would do the trick, maybe it takes a while for it to show the results. maybe, its the meds that's making the worms shed. if it doesn't stop, i would return to the vet, but they are so flippen expensive. i hope kitty comes right. shame!

Go back to the vet and request drontal. It is either a tablet or an injection. I almost positive that ivermectin does not treat tapes. You need to dose the drontal two weeks apart.
