Why do some Christians use Jesus' words in Mark 2:27 as an excuse not keep the Sabbath?
Mark 2:27: And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath. In most of the questions about the Sabbath, I have seen a lot of Christians who do not believe that we are obligated to keep the Sabbath use this scripture to support their arguments. Is Jesus really saying here that it is okay to do away with the Sabbath since it was made for us and not we for it?
@ the Thinker:
Some things to think about:
1. Paul kept it. So did the Christian women (read Luke 23:55, 56).
2. Where in the Bible does Paul do that?
3. Hebrews 4 tells us that God rested on the seventh day from His works. "Another day" refers a future day (time) when people are able to enter God's rest. The Israelites were not able to enter that rest because of unbelief (verse 6). The author of Hebrews was not talking about observing another day of rest.
4. Where does it say this?
5. Read James 2. There are no commands to keep the first day.
6. The Sabbath existed before Moses. It was was a reminder to the Jews, not a new commandment.
7. It is a sign of God's people, spiritual Israel. Read Revelation 12:17 and 14:12
8. As someone else pointed out Adventists are not the only Sabbath keeping Christians. And nowhere in the Bible were Christians worshiping on the first day of the week. John 20:19; Acts 20; 1 Cor. 16:2 are not proof that Sunday was the new day of worship.
@ Peachfuzz: We are not worshiping a day. We are worshiping the Creator on the day He sanctified and made holy and claimed as His own.
Jesus is the REASON FOR why we should keep sabbath. He is our example and He Himself kept the Sabbath. It was His custom.
The day we worship is relevant because it indicates whom we worship. We worship the Creator on the day He rested from His creative work. It is a day that God made for us so that we too can rest from our work (Hebrews 4:10).
@ vine: In Col 2:16 Paul was not referring to the weekly Sabbath but the yearly Sabbath which is mentioned in Leviticus 23:24-37. There were other Sabbaths. The disciples kept Saturday not Sunday.

Debbie - The scripture reveals that the carnal mind is at enmity with God.
Only by God's Spirit is truth revealed to us.
We can only "see" the truth in Keeping the Sabbath if it has been revealed to us by God.
If someone does not see this truth, they are still blinded by the god of this world.
They might be sincere in their beliefs but they are sincerely deceived.
The 4th Commandment IS Remember The Sabbath - Keep it Holy.
God has NEVER Changed The Sabbath and it is to be obeyed just as the other 9 Commandments are to be obeyed.

The Sabbath was never an issue during the times of the Apostle. They were naturally Sabbath Keepers. Sabbath wasn't a point of contention. They kept the Law. Christians today have failed in their Sabbath obligation. God will hold many religious teachers for spreading false teachings that are not scriptural. Sunday is not the Lord's day scripturally. Saturday is the Sabbath. The Sabbath applies to all humanity as well as the other nine Commandments. Exodus 20:3-17

New American Standard Bible (©1995)
"I will also put an end to all her gaiety, Her feasts, her new moons, her sabbaths And all her festal assemblies.
Hosea 2:11 God Said The Old Covenant Sabbath Would
Isaiah 1:13 "Bring your worthless offerings no longer, Incense is an abomination to Me. New moon and sabbath, the calling of assemblies-- I cannot endure iniquity and the solemn assembly.
Isaiah 1:14 "I hate your new moon festivals and your appointed feasts, They have become a burden to Me; I am weary of bearing them
#Col #2:16,17 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.
Some Things To Think About
1. Why do NO Christians keep the Sabbath in the New Testament?
2. Why does Paul THREE times tell us that we need not keep the Sabbath?
3. Why does Hebrews tell us that the day we keep is "ANOTHER" day?
4. Why does the Bible tell us that the Sabbath is a sign of the covenant made with Israel? and then why does the Bible tell us that this covenant does not apply to Christians?
5. Why are there NO commands for Christians to keep the Sabbath in the entire Bible?
6. Why does Adventism teach that Adam kept the Sabbath, when the Bible teaches that no-one before the time of Moses knew about the Sabbath?
7. Why does the Bible say that the Sabbath is a sign for Israel, and never applies it to mankind as a whole?
8. Why does Adventism gather weekly on Saturday, when in the New Testament and in the first, second, and third centuries, Christians gathered on Sunday?

Jesus himself broke the sabbath he healed people on the sabbath and the Pharisees came up to him and asked him why was he breaking the sabbath law and he said he was doing the work of God so on the sabbath it is ok to do the work of God. Be that preaching in the church being a nurse or doctor a fireman or policeman or whatever is doing good for another person as jesus healed people on the sabbath day he was told not to and it was seen as blasphemy by the pharisees but Jesus said it was ok to do so if it was the work of God.
Sabbath a saturday or sunday debate i am not sure.

No, we cannot do away with sabbath, because the Lord will not allow that. He is in control. God is saying in the bible that he made the sabbath for mankind. We are to honor him and keep that day set aside from any other day. Just like he rested on the sabbath, we are to do the same. No shopping, no laundry, or cleaning or picnics... It is a day to set aside to worship with other believers and sing hymns and read the word.

It is common for people to do what is comfortable and traditional...it is not so easy to do what God asked us to do because we love Him...that would mean we have to give up on our traditions of man. That would mean we have to acknowledge the Creator for who He is and what He did for us.
...oh yeah...that's exactly what Satan wants for us to do...forget the Creator. Some people may not know that Satan used to be called Lucifer...and according to some research my dad did, that means Day Star...or the Sun as well. False Holy day to replace God's Sabbath that He set aside since the first week of creation.

i read all the answers before me and ... they're all WRONG.
it is clear that this is representative of christendom NOW ... filled with
the followers of false teachings by false prophets.
i am NOT a sda.
i am a sabbath-keeper.
the sabbath is a COMMANDMENT, namely the 4th commandment.
to claim that the NT teaches NOT to keep the sabbath + 10 commandments clearly proves that most churches are satan-led ... always challenging God and going against Him.
This is loud and clear.

Which Sabbath? Jewish people consider it lasting from sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday. Jesus was a Jew. It was a part of the law covenant with ancient Israel than was fulfilled with Christ's death.
And there is no precedent in the Bible for Sunday being the Sabbath. Christians are supposed to worship and serve God every day, not just once a week.

Jesus was saying that he made the sabbath for man, and that it wasnt made for man to change it ect......God holy moral law was never done away with, its one of the 10 commandments and jesus taught about the sabbath, and He also kept the sabbath.....but mind you, in the old testament there were sabbaths that was part of the cerimonial law of sacrifices, they were called holy days and were many of them, they were a shadow of things to come and Jesus fulfilled all of that...dont let ANYONE ever tell you that Gods holy sabbath day was done away with, its a false teaching....Jesus and the apostles kept the sabbath and so should those who believe in Him, afterall Jesus was our example.....the new covenant is God shall put His laws into our minds and write them our hearts, meaning the 10 commandments....and he puts them into our hearts through our love for Jesus, because Jesus said, if ye love me, keep my commandments.

Because they understand not to base their beliefs by taking a passage like this and treat is eisegetically. In context, the sabbath was made for the man to whom it was given, in relation to resting on that day, where the day was to serve the man, and not for the man to serve the day.
Basing one's beliefs on eisegetically treating Scripture is a sure way to end up believing falsehoods and deceptions.
"3. Hebrews 4 tells us that God rested on the seventh day from His works. "Another day" refers a future day (time) when people are able to enter God's rest. The Israelites were not able to enter that rest because of unbelief (verse 6)."
You just contradicted yourself. The Israelites could not enter into God's rest due to their unbelief. If this day, referred to as "Today" were future, then their unbelief would be irrelevant. Believers enter into God's rest now, while it is still called "Today." God's rest is perpetual, and not one day out of seven. One enters into God's rest and remains there. The weekly sabbath was a type or shadow of this rest. Apparently, you believe you have to observe and keep shadows.
Item 5. There is no command in the n.c. to keep any day, including the sabbath. Christians are free to worship God whenever and wherever they so choose. Worship, btw, is not resting.
6. Totally false. There is no example of anyone prior to Sinai keeping the sabbath. The "remember" statement does not mean or imply it was because it was previously forgotten. It is an admonition to not forget it in the future.
7. The references from Rev. do not support your claim. Your claim is dependent upon inference; that these commandments are somehow old covenant commandments, and not new covenant commandments given to Christians. Inference is another method of deception.
8. Employs another method of deception; assumption. You assume Christians were meeting together on sabbaths for the purpose of communal worship which is impossible, seeing the Jewish Christians continued keeping the sabbath by resting on that day at home. The only examples in Scripture of both Jewish and Gentile Christians gathering together was on the first day of the week.
If Jesus is the reason for you keeping the sabbath, then you should practice circumcision, seeing as Jesus was circumcised. You should also be performing sacrifices, seeing as Jesus instructed a man healed of leprosy to go and perform what was required in the law of Moses. So whenever you are healed of a sickness or disease, follow the example!
You claim the day was a day "God made for us" when in fact, you were never a party to the old covenant. It ended long before you were born. You also confuse God's rest (sabbatismos) with the weekly shadow sabbath (sabbaton) with your reference to Heb. 4:10. We "rest" from a labor of vanity, for in the end, regardless of how hard you work, you would still die; you would still perish.
Col. 2:16 indeed refers to the weekly sabbath, and even Dr. Bacchiocchi agrees with this. You are simply in denial. The other sabbaths are covered also in Col 2:16.
What you fail to do is use the proper methods of scholarship for determining truth, and resort to many of the methods employed in deceptions. There is no command for those under the new covenant to keep the o.c. letter of the law; quite the contrary.
