When I stop smoking I start farting. WHY?

Seriously, within a day of giving up smoking I get very bloated and begin to fart much more than normal.

It's making it very difficult to quit. I'm not just gradually putting on a bit of weight because I'm eating more - it's more like I suddenly can't fit half my clothes because of bloating.

Farting all the time at work is a real problem too as I work with lots of people around me, and it's making me want to just start smoking again.

I only stopped yesterday but I remember this going on for months when I stopped last time for five months.

What's going on and what can I do about it?

Update:

OK now that everyone has stopped laughing...!!

I'm not chewing gum 'cos I hate it, and I figure I need the fibre to stop me feeling hungry as hunger can often make me want a cigarette.

What is beano?

Hmm, sorry I was laughing so much a little bit of wee came out. Ugh I know, when I gave up for the 100th time I was farting like a draughthorse. Bad, I could not control these things and was going to do the same as you and start smoking again, which I did. But one time I was determined to stop smoking and farting as well, so I went down to the local pharmacy and told him. He handed me a box of charcoal tabs and hey presto, the gas left me and so did the smoking.

This is kind of gross but people do it, be prepared to pass very dark bowel motions afterwards, they look like liquorish!!

    Hi alice..

im not laughing... its fairly common among newly quit people to have that symptom.. folks in support groups know, lol.. ok as near as i can tell, when we quit smoking the body goes through subtle changes.. often there is gas..

another is of course the famous "new quit pounds" a temporary weight gain.. neither should discourage you both are temporary.. there is a saying in support groups the weight can wait.. i have found the gas can be stopped using any of the flatulence products from the local druggist.. beano is one of those products..

you might want to check out a support group to help answer thos questions, i know it helped me, in fact i doubt i could have quit alone.. after smoking for over 40 years, i am now nicotine free for over 5 years..

I gotta tell ya I LOL'd at work too!!!

Are you chewing gum to stop smoking? Gum can make some people gassy. I would just try staying away from foods like broccoli, cereal, dairy products.

    Try beano too.

Black smoke is oil. You could have thrown a rod, broke a piston, or have a damaged piston ring. Either way, your engine is "toast", so it's time to look for a new car. Sorry
