Metal plates in forearm?

Hi

Eight years ago, I was run over at high speed. Anyway, the hospital fixed me up with metal plates, pins and rods - all over my body. Ive recover well apart from my left arm.

I have two metal plates in my forearm, and my arm as always been weak since the accident. I cant rotate my arm and when I lift, I get a pulling sensation were it feels like I can feel the pins taking the weight ( if I lift a heavy weight, it gives me the sensation that the pins will snap. I also get allot of pain from lifting.

I did a real nasty break on my arm (which wasn't my worst injury ) but it is the injury causing me the most problems to date.

Ive never asked a DR about having the plates removed, and he has never mentioned removing them. So, is the plates still serving a purpose? Surely the bone is fixed eight years on; However, is it still strengthening my arm?

I just want a rough Idea as I'm thinking of having them removed, if possible.

Has anyone ever had plates took out, and did it affect their movement etc?

THANKS.

If the plates are bothering you then you can have them taken out. You might get your supination and pronation back which would be the reason why you feel no strength in the arm since you can't use those muscles. In order to lift heavy objects you need to be able to supinate your forearm so you can get better leverage and be able to use your biceps muscle to it's fullest ability. In our office depending on the problem we take the plates out after a year. If you don't have a problem with them then they can stay in indefinitely.

Yes, the plates can usually be removed. See your gp and get a referral to an orthopaedic surgeon. He will assess the state of the bone before he starts. You will have to be careful for a few weeks after the op because there will be holes in the bone where the screws were and the bone under the plate will be have been altered by the presence of the plate. Everything usually settles down in a couple of months though.

If there are any bigger problems then he will discuss the options with you before he starts.

    Good luck
